Only 164 days until the Opening Night Roster boys.

Probably unpopular but I want Yzerman to get pick 1.1 *at any cost*. It’ll be cheaper to buy a pick and take a chance than it will be to acquire a proven star. You need one to win. Lord knows the league isn’t ever letting us win a lottery anyway. I just don’t know how else you get out of this hole.

I still believe in the Yzerplan! Im just too tired to talk about it anymore.

Go McDavid, I guess? It would be nice for him to win one. And Go Buffalo, they deserve it.

Taking off for Paris today! I was hoping to be able to watch some Wings playoff hockey while abroad but alas…

I’ve said it before elsewhere but I’ll say it here. The legitimate criticism of the Yzerplan isn’t “it’s taking too long”, it’s that we transitioned from full tank mode *too early*.

In 2021-22, we were still pretty bad. 74 points is bad even if it was only 8th worst in the league. Larkin, Raymond, and Seider were basically too good to let us be worse.

The 2022 offseason saw us add Husso, Copp, Chiarot, Perron, and Kubalik on 2 year+ deals. These moves seemed to be designed to make us more competitive. It kind of worked — the record was better in 2022-23 with Perron and Kubalik 2 and 3 on the team in scoring (Copp was 6) and Husso our number one goalie, and kind of also did not work — only 80 points. We draft Danielson, ASP (with the pick we got from selling on Hronek) Augustine — good players but no one who has moved the needle, instead of getting a shot at Bedard, Carlson, Fantilli.

There was no guarantee, in July 2022, that we could have drafted those top guys if we didn’t add. But the moves did signal an intent to pull out of the tank. Arguably it was necessitated because 74 points was not near the league bottom. To really bottom out. 23 probably would have had to trade Larkin right then for a younger potential 1C to pair with Raymond. Maybe Yzerman should have done that right then, but you can understand why he didn’t. It’s 20/20 hindsight to say he should have.

But there’s no guarantee we’d have made the playoffs in one of the last three years if we’d stayed in the tank for another year. Maybe, maybe not. But that’s where Yzerman made his most debatable moves.

    (Walman trade aside).

Man McDavid is something else. 2nd most Art Ross trophies of all time before his 30th birthday

I wouldnt say its likely he catches Wayne for that record, but 4 more in his career doesnt seem impossible

Interesting quote from Wheeler about Zeev Buium but it includes ASP too. ASP was drafted 1 year after Nemec and 2 after Hughes/Clarke, also wasn’t a top 10 pick like the above 3. I think we’ll really see what ASP is in about 2 years

If you look around the league, virtually every non-Matthew Schaefer young D in it is having a tough time. That includes Artyom Levshunov, Zayne Parekh and Sam Dickinson from his own draft. And it extends to older players. All of Tom Willander, Olen Zellweger, Pavel Mintyukov, Sam Rinzel, Logan Mailloux, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Kevin Korchinski, Dmitri Simashev and David Jiricek have had their struggles. Luke Hughes, Simon Nemec and Brandt Clarke, who are all now finally establishing themselves in the league, have had some real highs and lows to get to where they’re getting to now and still have work to do.

I am disappointed the Wings did not make the playoffs this year.

At the end of the day, I really like hockey and starting tomorrow there is going to be really good hockey, maybe the best hockey, every night for the next few weeks. I am really looking forward to it.

  9. DRW YouTube page didn’t even put up ANY post game comments from game 82, I don’t think I’ve ever see that.
