@Canucks de Vancouver

[Brendan Batchelor] EP40 : J’aime ça ici. C’est comme à la maison. J’ai signé ici pour une raison. Nous sommes dans une situation difficile. Aucun de nous n’est content de la saison, mais nous avons de bonnes pièces ici.

Nope, this thread won’t be a toxic civil war whatsoever.

  2. Radiant_Sherbert7272

Then, actually do something to help fix the problem. He says this time and time again. He promises that he will be better and that the team will be better, and yet nothing changes.

  3. defusing-drama

He’s right. None us of are happy. I hope we view this as positive and a long needed tank, rather than arguing amongst ourselves and blaming the players.

3 years of last place, it’s all I ask. Let’s look to the future

  4. WelpNevertheless

His cup hoist is going to be legendary

  5. IdaRed17

EP40 would be a great second line center. If he’s not depended on I bet he he produces 70 pts or more but he’s just not that guy

  6. DisgruntledCatGuy

This man is out here catching shit from fans, media, probably suffering mentally from all of that while supporting his wife through a pregnancy which she just had another miscarriage for, and still putting up the most points on the team while playing really well defensively and putting his body on the line blocking shots all season, but fuck him, right?

  7. ThelongNameNo1has

I will always defend the guy. He’s basically been raised in a broken home here in Vancouver

  8. OnionSad6134

Why did no one ask him if he was playing hurt this year.

  9. DanHamhoose

Hopefully he’s realized he shouldn’t follow the moronic off-season training advice he’s been given by dinosaurs about « bulking up » and « being tougher » and gets back to what he did to make himself successful before.

  10. WhatTheBrock

Am i happy with peteys performance? No

Will i still cheer for him to make a resurgence? Yes

  11. It’s undeniable that he’s underperformed his contract, but after what we saw from Quinn Hughes I think we should be happy Petey is staying loyal. He’ll be a good veteran to play alongside the top 3 picks we’re about to get this year and probably the next.

  12. What’s he supposed to say to make people happy?

If he says he wants to stay, he’s dead weight.

If he says he wants to leave, he’s a quitter.

  13. BigBirdsBrain

He’s still the best player on the team, just had a rough year. If he resets and plays his game, people switch up real quick.

  14. indianasparta

This whole Petey saga feels like classic Canucks fans running their star players out of town . The guy is going to bounce back and have more good seasons . He should be a Canuck lifer , too often has this franchise given up or traded players that wanted to be here forever . The guy just lost two babies and was still our season MVP. For christ sakes support the guy while he’s here not like we need the cap space right now anyways.

  15. I still like Pettersson as a player. I think he’s good defensively and he’s a great set up guy. He’s not a scorer anymore, that’s fine.

I don’t like the contract. I’m sure he knows he’s being overpaid. It is what it is. His payday hamstrung the team and we lost some guys we shouldn’t have.

Things are different now. Petey should not worry about his own game. He should be mentoring the new guys who come in, like Hronek is doing with Buium. You see Petey on the bench and he talks to no one. You see the team talking before a faceoff and Petey is already waiting at the dot.

No more lone wolf bullshit. Be a team player. Be a mentor.

  16. barelyincollege

Not that there’s anything terrible about this response, but I want him to get pissed for once like MacKinnon and McDavid do.

Less « None of are happy », more « I’m going to lead this team next year. »

  17. Winnie_Cat

I’d like it too if I was being paid 11.6 to live and work in Vancouver. Maybe get more than 51 points and we’ll like you here as well.

  18. EverythingCopacetic_

On one hand I completely sympathize with the guy. He’s gone through a considerable amount of turmoil in his life basically coinciding with his drop in play. He’s been raked through the mud by his GM, president & ex coach on his preparation, habits and commitment even when he was productive.

This is the same guy who broke his shot down into components before he entered the NHL so he could take what was a weakness of his and make it a strength. Travis Green during Peteys rookie season talked about how he carried himself like a pro at such a young age and how he was so committed to the details. Horvat also used to laud Peteys habits while he was here

There’s a clip of Boudreau telling Petey he was the hardest working player at practice on that given day and that he doesn’t have to worry about production if he continued on like that.

On the other hand 2 years of mediocrity isn’t excusable. Whether it be injury, linemates, personal turmoil or anything else you can’t excuse what he has done on the ice for the last 2 seasons and unfortunately the fanbase has basically made up their minds that he is toxic and must go. If he bounces back people will say he only produces when it doesn’t matter. If it happens on another team they’ll ask why he couldn’t do it here and hate him even more. If he does not bounce back they’ll feel vindicated that he’s a bum.

Petey is at the point where there is no winning with Canucks fans and so it would probably be best if he was moved.

  19. variouslobsters

I’m genuinely happy that Petey feels at home here.

  20. Low_Contract7809

The team experienced one of the worst seasons in franchise history.  Petey lead the team in points.  He didn’t play great, but he’s not the problem.

Mario lemieux himself wouldn’t have saved this season.

  21. Fair-Calligrapher-19

Petey has been through so much this year with the 2 miscarriages his wife and him had to deal with.  People may not fully appreciate how devastating that can be for would be parents.  Let’s give him a little slack

  22. Mission_Inflation505

I am fine with this. We won’t be any good for years yet. His contract is bad, but it is fine overall, since we’re rebuilding.

And I am still holding out hope that maybe, MAYBE, with a McKenna or a Steinberg, he can get back to 70-80 points with a good 2 way game.

  23. hallmarktm

It’s crazy that people still say he doesn’t care of try, the blocked shots alone disprove those theories, no one’s standing up to block shots all the time if they don’t give a fuck, if you’ve played hockey you’d understand

  24. WeVeeReality

I think it’s inevitable that he’ll have another great season at some point. Personally I’ve always liked him but if the team insists on trading him they should wait until he’s fire again. It’s just common sense not to trade him during one of his massive slumps.

But if you can sell the narrative that « the old Petey is back » then at that point the team could get some powerful return for him like a 1st, a player and a prospect. Teams are starved for elite talent especially elite center so if he’s on a 100pt pace halfway through next season they will ignore all the bad seasons and cough up significant assets… Especially with the cap going up.

It sounds like he likes living here though so the team might be forced to keep him, but just my opinion I think that might turn out to be a blessing in disguise in a few years. This is the low point of his career. It doesn’t get worse than this, so he can only get better from here on out.

  25. ObjectiveMountain738

He’s catching shit on a daily basis but at least he’s not a Quitter Hughes.

  26. DJScotty_Evil

Doing everything he can without a decent partner.

  27. TheAvocad00

I really hope he can recover from whatever is going on. It’s a shot in the dark at this point, but it’s not like the Canucks need cap space, nor are they going to get any trade value out of him.

  28. XxSchmidtyx

Quote me on this, in 2-3 years when the Canucks have full lines, he will be back up in the 90-100 point range

  29. EpicPotato806

He might raise his numbers dishing to
McKenna who will win a Calder too

  30. EverySecondCountss

I still see his elite hockey sense and IQ. I hope he puts in the work this off season for his skating.

Combine that with Malholtra and two solid wingers, I think he would suprise a lot of people. He NEEDS to dial in his skating his off season though for his 4 way skating skills and skating in tight. I really hope he finds what he needs there.

It would feel so good to not shit on him during these years, still believe in him, and make all the loudest arm chair experts eat crow.

  31. Far_Language_5812

Petey’s the best canuck on the ice almost every night. People who don’t watch the games or don’t know hockey can argue all they want. He plays against opposing teams best offensive or defensive line every night depending on home and away. If the complainers looked at every other players performance under a microscope like they do 40’s then they would gain some perspective.

  32. Traditional_Toe_1090

As long as he’s happy here and defends Vancouver, you’re welcome in my books

  33. Horvat53

I want Petey to be great. I hope he can find that form again.

  34. sayros28

Bless his soul. He must have the greatest earmuffs and blinders to block out vancouver level negativity.

  35. QuiGGz96

I like Petey for better or worse. But I hope we manage to move him out. Give the reigns to the up and coming guys. He’s not the type of guy that you want mentoring your youth. I’d rather keep Boeser over Petey. I am surprised with all of the negativity from the media and fans he’d even want to stay tbh

  36. TarsesaK

I hope he stays and has a happy family life in the city. Bonus for everyone if his allstar hockey form returns as well

  37. Nice to see every excuse in the book for him being aired out here because of some uninspiring quote from him. If he’s not traded and comes back the same, it will get ugly. He will be booed out of town.

  38. EpicPotato806

Hopefully petey spends the off-season recalibrating and just taking a mental break. Turn off all media from Vancouver and get his mind cleared.

Probably the last two years (Miller, planning a wedding and their miscarriage) did a number on the brain. Media hammering him with Miller questions and criticism of his play certainly did not help.

Getting blasted by the FO about his fitness too.
