[TSN.ca] Rencontre des Maple Leafs avec Mats Sundin au sujet d’un rôle potentiel de gestion

J’adore Sundin, mais je ne sais pas quel type de rôle serait le meilleur "ajuster" pour lui.

I can see him leading European scouting or something along those lines. Would be great to have him back in the org

This fucking ownership group is going to wait until a month before the draft to hire someone, give them no time to hire a team or make a plan and then they’re going to wonder why nothing changes. They could have hired someone before the trade deadline and kept a real plan in place, which would have probably got them 3rd in the draft. At the very least they could have fired tre soon after the trade deadline and started this process earlier so they could have months to formulate a plan and build a management team.

As much as I loved Sundin back in the day, what would he bring to a management role??
Other than the “star power” I don’t understand what or how this helps this team do anything

The ownership group is gonna start nostalgia-baiting us to make us think they care about this team. Don’t fall for it.

  5. Yzerman the player, Detroit fans love.
Yzerman the GM, they’re calling for his head.

Knowing that, I can’t see why Mats would want to come in, with no prior experience, and proceed to ruin his legacy when it inevitably doesn’t work out.

But I agree with him taking a Swedish-centric advisory/scouting position. That’s a great place for him to start and not have to dive into the deep end.

Would this maybe be something like:

    – Gillis: President Of Hockey Ops
    – Sundin: VP/Special Advisor
    – GM: Insert Candidate

This is obviously a pr stunt to take heat off MLSE after having a piss of a season.

Heck Sundin hasn’t done anything managerial level at any level.

Gillis/Doug Armstrong as president and hire a qualified Gm.

I honestly think Mats is only one of two things… President, where he doesn’t have to be too hands on… Or European Scout, where he can be more hands on and more at home.

I mean great story and all. But besides being a great hockey player, does Sundin even have experience in hockey ops? Like does he scout? Does he even watch the League at this point? Last I heard he was living a chill family life in Sweden.

This is a PR ‘feel-good’ gambit by the executive suite. Mats is a great guy but shouldn’t get sucked into this black-hole.

  11. Omg we’re into the fucking Manchester United arc. Dark times ahead!

  12. Sundin seems pretty happy in Sweden, as much as I’d like it, I don’t have my hopes up

He won’t leave Sweden for at least another decade, he has kids he’s raising

As long as it’s a background advisory role, I’m fine with it.

Mats Sundin is being hired for the role of Owner? I’m in.

Who doesn’t love Mats Sundin? And maybe he is well suited to whatever role they’re considering. But the role of hockey player/captain comprises a very different set of skills from the role of a manager. Maybe Sundin is management material, and maybe this will turn out great. But given Pelley’s general cluelessness, I’m pretty skeptical of this move. It smacks of « old boys club » thinking to me. Or maybe this about fan optics?

Love Sundin and would love to be proven wrong, but I have zero confidence in Pelley.
