I refuse to look up any of these names until I know where we are picking, if at all. If we get 1 then obviously it’s McKenna. If it’s 2-5 then I’m looking forward to checking out highlights and scouting reports.
Honestly my top 5 picks are Gavin Mckenna, Verhoff, and Stenberg.
Gavin Mckenna can be a No 1 or no 2 centre behind Matthews and Tavares.
Verhoff is that a 6’4 Right handed Two way Defenseman Similar to Victor Hedman- Could be nasty in a playoff run
Stennberg- Swedish playmaker/Sniper could be a Swedish version of Mitch Marner
I’d literally be thrilled with any of those 5 and wouldn’t consider most other players. Maybe Lawrence or Rudolf but seriously how do you look past the top 5.
I dont think theres a universe where McKenna / Stenberg aren’t 1 and 2. If by some divine miracle Vaerhoff is available at 5 we take him. If not Reid would be the runner up. We NEED a righty RD.
I call bullcrap. There are 10 high picks available – 🛑 Dubas-ing. We need D plain & simple. We are stuck with 88, 34, 44 if they don’t waive. Take the top D prospect available & count our lucky stars UNLESS there’s a team who covets a forward & will give us one of their D prospects WE covet.
If we take 1OA, trade down for Alberts Smits and a later first. Either the later first or a young top prospect. Either Reid or chase should be above Verhoeff. Alberts Smits should be our target. Smits is pro ready and comparable to Moritz Seider. Verhoeff is essentially just every other high ceiling offensive defenceman. And he would take at least say 2 years roughly to develop. If we stay too 5 our two targets should stay Smits or Reid. We don’t need forwards. We can just continue to develop our existing forward prospects.
We have a 44% chance of getting the 6th pick and losing our pick and being the laughing stock of the town. I dont even wanna think about the draft picks till the lottery is done.
Sorry for being negative but it’s just facts.
If leafs finish bottom 5 im hoping Verhoeff is available but he’s probably going second
Assuming they keep the pick, I would definetly target one of the defense man. I like Chase Reid the most, so if, and thats a big if, he is available at 5 you have to pick him. I like Carson Carels second of the crop of D-men, but I think you are definetly also happy with Verhoeff as well.
If they somehow get pick 1 or 2, I think they should look to trade back to 4-5 and try and find some value. While McKenna and Stenberg will definetly be great players, I just think the need for a center and especially a great, young defencemen is so big, and with the cupboards still pretty dry, getting value in terms of picks or prospects plus still picking high this year is very appealing. Despite that, you can’t really go wrong with picking McKenna or Stenberg if you win the lottery, I would just like to see them get a bit creative.
Overall, its a great crop in the top 5 and, again assuming they keep their pick, I am excited at the idea of having a high-end prospect back in the system.
Id like to see them get Verhoeff. Right handed 6ft4 215 lbs defenseman
I disagree with the notion of BPA for this team. I still think blowing it up isn’t the answer. They can trade Matthews and Nylander and still not get a player as good as those 2 for a fucking decade. They didn’t have a player as good as Matthews for the last 3 decades as is and they’ve never drafted a player as good as him. They have a legitimate franchise centerpiece and they should be giving him the keys and doing every thing in their power to keep building around him.
I’m taking a dman or I’m trading down to take a dman. If the Leafs win the lottery with pick 1 or 2, I’d be trading down to 4 or 5, get a few extra picks, maybe a player, maybe see if you can offload Joshua in that deal too, then still take the dman. Taking McKenna or Stenberg just continues what we just did that didn’t work. A highly skilled winger. Building around highly skilled wingers isn’t the right strategy. I just had an argument on here with a bunch of people that said the Leafs never drafted a dman when they had a chance in the last decade.
I would take a dman or trade down and still take a dman.
I agree with you, but they aren’t drafting in the 1st
We won’t. Been around long enough to know we get bumped and Boston picks 6th. They will select a good to great defenseman. We will hear about it regularly for the next six or seven years, or until something more humiliating happens.
Look in your heart. You know it to be true.
The prophecy of suffering has already been written.
Best available 💯 of the time.
No Malhotra? I’m wondering, if we get 1, could you see a world where we trade down and collect more assets?
Why is up with Verhoeff. I though he would for sure be 2nd or 3rd at the very worst but it seems hes dropping hard on so many draft boards? Are people not sold on his offensive upside? Large right shot dman that played well as an underager at the world juniors. Very shocked.
If Keaton is gone we should take Alberts Smits. No one is ready for that conversation though. Kids been a monster playing against men at 17 and confident as hell. Leadership and desire to win.
Taking the best player available is the whole point of the draft
Just curious, do you think a top five pick will revamp our team?
McKenna I imagine could be a difference maker. I don’t know much about the rest. You’re saying it’s a deep class for defenseman but defenseman ( other than Schaefer Makar etc) usually need a lot longer to mature to the NHL level.
Who should Boston take if it drops to 6th?
They’ll probably trade the 5th overall pick for a third round pick and some Pizza Pizza coupons.
What theyre going to do:
Grok which player is the best here
Trade back and draft the twins.
50/50 in the spot they’re in to pick higher or out of the top 5.
Dude. They are going to trade the pick. The leafs board is delusional.
Verhoeff is my pick if he’s available
Man the idea of getting Verhoeff sounds terrific.
Last time the Leafs got a Top 5 pick tail end of Burke era, they picked Luke Schenn and later Morgan Reily..
They were OK picks except Schenn proved his value elsewhere..
I can’t see a world outside of getting 1OA that the Leafs don’t trade this pick. Matthews and Nylander have both said that they don’t want a rebuild and anyone other than McKenna, and *maybe* Stenberg are NHL ready.
This team needs to get better right now and there are almost no assets available to make moves. A prospect that will be ready in a few years doesn’t help whatsoever.
