As a Habs fan……nope !!!!
He had decade,,,,bye bye Willy,,,, bye bye Matthews
Didn't CJ say Treliving was trying to trade Loughton and McMann for a bit but no one was biting, they wanted to wait and see what else was out there? Can you imagine what you guys would've said if Treliving didn't make those Loughton and McMann trades for what he could get when he could get it? "Omg Brad did absolutely nothing ooooh noooooo"
We went from “why would Crosby want to stay in Pittsburgh?” To: “why would Matthew’s want to stay in Toronto?”
It’s karma. It’s beautiful. It feels right.
I worked before for a corporate food manufacturer traded on the stock market. In meeting so many times they said if they can save a penny then we need to save that penny because every penny adds up. That's the mentality of corporate Toronto Maple Leafs. That corporate structure is going to get worse. Just based on the public view of corps. Players in the future will avoid Toronto.
Austin to any team for a bag of training pucks
Points wise and performance wise Matthews is not a top player in the league, and has no passion. Trade him while he still has value. This team won’t succeed with him.
Mathews is coming to La. 2 first round picks. Carter George and a nhl player.
Why wouldn't you want to play in the Pacific. It's the most chill 😎 division to play in the nhl.
I can't wait for Mathews to leave, I have been sick of him for years and just know he is not a leader and will NEVER WIN WITH THIS TEAM,same with Nylander I can't wait until they are gone I want change and something to be stoked about
Profits >>> People
Who isn't? In a couple years they will realize the need for a rebuild. Why wait to figure out what is already painfully obvious. The worst possible thing they could do next year is make the playoffs.
when corporations make big money on their assets which has been for the 55 years then why would you spend more money when you cant gain anymore then you already get?????
When will this fanbase understand that the Leafs will never come close to a Stanley Cup with #34, #88, $44, and #91 on the roster??? Auston has to go. He does not give a sh*t.
Looking forward to ten more years of grousing.
Insisting that Matthews HAS to remain a Leaf is the dumbest, most short-sighted take anyone can have!!!
Matthews would flourish in a new surrounding, he's still a great hockey player as long as his knee heals well, he needs to get out of the spotlight of Toronto and those expectations
Them lowering the player's discount is WILD or scrapping the father's trip… I didn't know that was a thing that happened during the time where they should be worrying about ALL sorts of other things to fix their organization. That's SO Disney of them (former 23 year Disney Cast Member here) to pay less because of their "brand"… that's how Disney abuses and exploits their employees.
Losing a guaranteed top 5 pick because they were one point over is wild too… but it's so on brand?
Honestly I’m only worried about it if Matthews isn’t traded. The dude just isn’t captain material. We need a leader on this team.
Wait until he forces the trade to Detroit, and suddenly that team has Matthews at 1C and Larkin at 2C, coupled with those mammoth young dmen.
TOR is doomed to lose until they get better ownership, an owner that ACTUALLY cares about TOR winning a Cup!
The rest of the stuff can NEVER be fixed when ownership only cares about making money, period!
u got montreal ottawa buffalo and detroit all on the rise. let alone the bolts and panthers already there. its time to do the complete tear down and get the rebuild started from the bottom. 5+ years.
Trade Nylander while he can get a good return. Matthews is a good player but he needs to find another gear to lead a successful team.
As a nucks fan who is also looking for a GM, the next GM of the Leafs will have the Canucks to look towards if he fails, while he could just take a job with the Canucks and have an easy job to flourish
The games where they fought back to get a single point when they should have been fully tanking were very frustrating
FFS , Matthews hasn't been dominant for 2 years, and he's not getting any younger
If Matthews goes, Nylander will go and then you have a rebuild
Worried? Nah I’m resigned to the fact there won’t be a real cup run for at least 5 years, most likely longer
Just here in case anyone wants to admit they were wrong about Mitch Marner.
Compare Matthews' statement to what Connor McDavid said when asked the same question.
"I want to win with Edmonton "
Completely unambiguous.
0:27 Bro is Depressed 😭💀
Media training on point at MLSE
Why is the love-affair of this clown Matthews so prevalent?
I'm sure someone else said it , but in case they didn't, no it wouldn't be guaranteed if they got 4th last year two spots went to lower seeds. 20 percent chance
Everyone is saying we can’t loose Matthews. Fair. However, since his contract started he has not lived up the $ amount he’s being paid. Arguably by a substantial margin. Last year the excuse was injury. Whats the excuse this year? Similar production, looked the same on the ice. Why is nobody holding him to account? Now, he’s not sure? Is he be blaming others not helping him produce? Is it just about his next contract and cashing in and need a Marner like player to help him reach the production so he can get paid again? Cause if he stays and the production isn’t the same I’m sure everyone would agree another 13 mill+ contract would be way off in value. To me, its the same as always, he is about the $$$ and himself first.
What is everyone smoking ???
Get whatever you can get for this guy.
Highest paid player and for what ?? — the guys a floater !!
The USA TEAM used him as a back checker !!!
IMAGINE ASKING GRETZKY LEMIEUX OR McDavid TO DO THAT !!!
Furthermore…
LEAFS ORGANIZATION should borrow the COMEDY NETWORK's slogan…
"TIME WELL WASTED!!!"
Never 0nce did I hear him say – I wanna stay !
There's only one question to ask today about Mathews: are you prepared to pay more than 14, 15, or 16 million for this player at the end of his contract? If the answer is no, it's high time to trade him.
People forget that it didn't take Ovi until he was 32 to win a cup. Some teams just take a bit longer than others. Need to give Matthews a team that's competitive because if the Olympics shows anything is that Matthews can win with a good team around him.
You guys need a healthy Austin producing again like he can.
Then trade him.
If the Leafs want to "Re-Tool" the line-up fast: they will have to pull off a Boston like magic show that ships off an A++ superstar like…. a Joe Thorton type. Ship that A++ asset some place and fill the void with an A player with a couple of B, to B-, types with a couple of draft picks thrown in. Auston Matthews is the only perceived "A++" talent on the Leafs roster that meets the Joe test for value. I might be pushing that price tag up a bit high.
I don't believe there is any point in shipping off Nylander. His attitude is almost perfect for the Toronto market. The Leafs can work around that. He might end up becoming an A++ asset with age. Nylander has been throwing the occasional hit. That behaviour will continue to evolve with time. A nice big additional body like Matthews Knies injected into the Leaf's line-up may make Nylander more productive and encourage a higher level of personal engagement and interest in… team first. It's a crap shot one way or another.
What about a "rebuild?" No one wants to talk about the obvious. Is it just an "one-off" year?
We'll know soon enough.
I'm not going to hold my breath in hopeful anticipation. Reality will be what it evolves into being.
I do honestly believe that Auston Matthews will likely thrive in another environment where he isn't expected to be anything but a superstar winger who scores goals by the dozens in streaks. The "C" is a mark of pride and commitment on most NHL teams. I'm not sure Auston Matthews has fully embraced the full commitment to being a real Canadian like leader for the Leafs. He's not Canadian after all.
Auston Matthews is an absolute professional. He sets goals for himself and achieves those goals. He'll do that if he's given the opportunity and supporting cast. Then a system where he's expected, and allowed, to float through the offensive zone as he feels fit to do. Defense wins championships. A good solid defense needs an effective offence. That's where Auston will shine. If he ends up with the Carolina Hurricanes or the Columbus Blue Jackets; look out. It would be even worse if Auston ended up on the Sabres. The good news is… Auston is rumoured to want to be warm and tax free. There is hope in that also. So many questions remain.
The Leafs need to fix their defense first. Hopefully the Hildabeast is the next Leafs starting goalie. He's looking promising. That will be a foundation to work with. So a "re-tool' might be possible. If it's done honestly. It will be expensive one way or another. Unless the Leafs get really lucky with free agent signings. Unlikely but we can hope. Those would have to be assets that "want" to play in Toronto for the Leafs. It's all about ego and bragging rights for some players. We'll see who wants to be a Leaf soon enough also.
Thanks SDPN. The Leafs are less about crying over and more about head scratching right now.
As a bruins fan, watching this podcast has softened me on the maple leafs lol
Late stage capitalism is at it again
Retool = repeat
