Roberts would bring an element to the team similar to what Brind’Amour brought to the Canes. Relentless effort and pushing each player to their limits through conditioning. Get him in there!
I love Gary Roberts! There isn't a digger in the game quite like him anymore. He's the MAN! He knows what it takes to give it your all, then give more.. but..would he resonate with this generation of players? Hockey has changed.. the players have changed… it's not the old-school face to the boards style anymore. There needs to be common ground between the staff and the players. If the Leafs could find a way to break through to the players, this could be rejuvenated and different. At the end of the day boys.. the game isn't the same anymore and all the elderly people from the old days in executive staff needs to go. There isn't a place for them anymore because their mentalities just don't mesh with today's new generation of players. I am saying this and I am old school. Keith Pelley is going to open an A.I. Data Centre and name it President and GM of MLSE.
I would go with Mike Gillis as president hockey operations and GM. Mats Sundin as VP Hockey Ops. Gillis handles trades and big picture, including dealing with corporate. Sundin's role liason with coach, players, minor league and scouting. Analytics can still be provided by Pridham and Company. Roberts player development, whip them into ship shape. He and Mats likely have a strong connection. Bet Mats might have raised Roberts name during interview.
If the Leafs think Berube is difficult, imagine how they would feel if Brind'amour was the Leafs coach; he's relentless, finds a way to improve no matter how well the Hurricanes are going.
