Wow, that’s a hell of an analysis. Statistics major?

    Very interesting read.

I’ve said before that Holland’s final few drafts have really set the rebuild back. Svechnikov, Cholowski, Rasmussen, Zadina…

Instead of having a few good prospects in the cupboard already, aside from Hronek, Yzerman had to essentially start from scratch. Even Mantha has underperformed relative to expectations. Finally at 31 years old, he hits 30+ goals.

At the end of the day, all good teams find gems in the later rounds. Hutson has done wonders to accelerate Montreal’s rebuild. Buffalo got a solid player in JJ Peterka and Samuelsson, both drafted in the 2nd round. Ottawa found Pinto in the 2nd round.

Glad we found Finnie, but need a couple more like him if we want to be competitive with the rest of the Atlantic.

Best analysis I’ve ever read. I’m thinking the Wings need entirely new drafting staff and pro scouting staff.

This is really great work and I’m sure a lot of fans won’t like your conclusion. Hockey rebuilds are often really, really painful because of the bizarre drafting process.

We have to be cautious due to the small sample size, but one way to more wholesomely analyze Steve Yzerman with a larger sample as a drafting GM (and how he makes his selection), you might consider adding his selections from his time in TB. You would remove draft year and generalize it to year 1, year 2, etc and go from there. I’m not sure how readily available some of the data you use is, but it’s just a thought

  5. Good read. Pretty much sums up how I’ve been feeling about our prospect depth so far and that development time stat definitely has me worried ha

  6. This is awesome and definitely suggests that the Yzerman-led Wings aren’t off schedule considering the lack of talent from the 2010s draft classes

Excellent post and look at drafting and development. Loved the look at the sophomore slump as well. Hope the team has people like you, but it looks like they probably don’t.

Great read! I’d be curious to compare Steve’s drafting with the redwings to his tenure with the lightning.

  9. Doesn’t help that we tanked during covid era which you can assure hurt development. Add in that the 2021 and 2022 drafts were relatively weak in general. Wings got a case of wrong place wrong time.
