so if Ottawa loses quickly…with Brady Tkachuk being the captain…and doing all the fake tough guy stuff that certain segments of the fan base love even if doesn't actually help his team win games…..then what would be the justification for bringing him in?

Because they would have to gut their prospect depth to get him and there's no indication that his beloved "skill with snarl" power forward game actually translates to winning hockey in the playoffs (for those eager to make the Matthew comparison, he at least has 2 back to back 100 pts seasons, a top 3 hart finish + selke votes, none of which Brady has ever come close to)

With Brady – you have the combination of 2 years of term and then can go as UFA. Would he resign in CHI? Would the Hawks be willing to commit 7 years to BT for his 29-36 years? Don't know – but seems premature to go all in for that type of guy would I would expect to be REALLY expensive. Would rather go for a guy like Robertson who you can come to an agreement contract wise before acquiring him.
