This game was wild.
Interestingly, Staal indeed has possession and control of the puck before both skates cross the leading edge of the blue line, which would make this an on-side play.
The issue here seems to be that Rule 83 makes no provisions for WTF “possession and control” specifically means, which allows for different possible silly interpretations.
If the puck is between my skates, I would consider that possession and control, provided nobody else is nearby, capable of stealing it, in that moment. Etc etc
Staal is in the middle of stickhandling across the blue line. The big problem for me is that (if you showed the clip without the blue line in it) if you asked referees, “Where is the moment when Staal lost possession and control of the puck?” They would think you had lost your mind.
Situation room failed on this one, imo.
Weird that a penalty shot can be called on a shot that would’ve been no goal due to the offsides anyways.
So the play was offside because Staal "didnt have possession of the puck on entry" (sure okay)…so it was offside from the start…the goal didnt count, but the penalty does? If the play should have been blown dead for offside, how does the penalty still count? What if an injury had occured on the goal sequence?

The reason they shouldn't have even got the penalty shot is because it was offsides. Anything that happened after he was offsides doesn't matter because the play should have been dead so nothing should happen even if they scored or anything
How did they call a penalty shot and the play was offside, shouldn’t the time restart when the off sides happened, and the penalty would have been dead cuz the whistle would have already been blown ??
I know penalties happen after the whistle but this doesn’t seem right, the play was dead and it was a missed call by the official.

Honoring a penalty/penalty shot after an offsides call is wild to me. The play would have been whistled dead and the penalty wouldn't have happened. The fact they add time back to the clock should be definitive proof that play did not continue to happen.
