What the fuck is Pelley doing….one freaking position? If they only hire one guy which leaves Pelley/Rogers involved at the top it’s so fucking over for this franchise.

  2. Failedmusician87

I’m just done with this team. See you tomorrow.

From Lou, to Dubas, to the Bargain Bin version of Burke, and now potentially to the Dollarama version of Dubas… what a timeline…

  4. footwith4toes

I might be taking a pause on my fandom if it’s Chayka

  5. dudeacris

at least it’s not another shitty hockeypatroll advertisement disguised as a reddit post

  6. DialedDrawback

Yeah because the last former member of Arizona management with deep pockets due to restaurant ownership was such a success, we need to do it all over again.

    This fucking team, man.

  7. apatheticboy

Is owning a restaurant chain a prerequisite for this job?

My initial thoughts (assuming the above is accurate):

    * Is Gillis out because he insisted on too much autonomy? Is there a red flag on ownership being too involved?

    * Chayka – my initial reaction was negative when his name came up over the last week or so. Came in very young, team didn’t accomplish much, and was surrounded by controversy for his departure. But when you actually review his overall set of trades/contracts, overall on the positive side? I didn’t like the Hall trade given no chance at winning, but that was apparently ownership meddling. I think overall he did a good job considering the shoestring budget he would have had, but he’s not without some redflags, and it really seemed like Bettman didn’t like him.

    * White – hard to know what he’s been responsible for behind the scenes, but obviously he’s been part of a great organization for a long time. Should at minimum have some great insight into *how* Dallas does what it does successfully, even if he wasn’t the mastermind behind most of it.

I had been hoping for something like Gillis as President, Gold or White as GM, and Sundin in there as a special advisor or something. The Gillis rumours were so strong, I hadn’t given Chayka much thought. If he’s hired, will really need to hear what he has to say, who else is involved, etc.

Pelley is utterly clueless. Tell me another story about the Roughriders

  10. goleafsgo13

If it’s Chayka, I think fans need to walk away.

Boys were going from pizzas to baconators

  12. Hellcion

Pelley is just doing what chatgpt is telling him to do.

Genuinely asking – can somebody explain the issue everybody seems to have with Chayka? Seems like he did decently well in drafting and trading in Arizona with an extremely limited budget and staff. I know the memes about owning restaurants an all that but I don’t understand why there seems to be nuclear hate for him.

  14. fustikecske

i still dont understand this whole thing. why the hell are they hiring the GM first if they want a POHO? this makes zero sense

and if they dont want a POHO but a yesman GM, this franchise is fucking done

    From Wikipedia:

On January 25, 2021, Chayka was suspended from working in the NHL for the remainder of the 2021 calendar year. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman cited « conduct detrimental to the league and game », and further ruled that Chayka had « breached his obligation to the club » by pursuing opportunities with other clubs while still under contract with the Arizona Coyotes, and then terminating his contract with three years remaining.[7] Chayka and the Coyotes were later revealed to have hosted a private scouting combine for draft prospects, which is strictly forbidden by the NHL.[8] The Coyotes were subsequently forced to forfeit their second-round selection in the 2020 draft and their first-round pick in the 2021 draft.[8]

I’d rather have them hire a bad GM than one who blatantly cheats in a very obvious manner. No sane and smart organization should ever consider hiring someone with questionable character. Hoping of those 2 it would be the Dallas guy, Dallas has a strong organizational reputation and perhaps they can bring that culture to the Leafs.

  16. NatureGivesAndTakes

Starting to think this isn’t about hiring the best person for the job, but hiring some who: 1) Won’t command a very high salary, 2) Is easy to control and 3) Is aligned with the company vision of retooling to make the playoffs.

  17. bforce1313

Isn’t Chayka partially responsible for the mess that was the coyotes? Maybe I’m wrong but that isn’t someone I’d be eager to hire

  18. BiitchenKitchen

I see alot of people down on Chayka, im indifferent.

If you go back in his trade history, its actually not that bad, he was one of the first GM’s to start playing the long game and locking up young guys to 8 year deals that ended up being bargains (Keller, Schmaltz, Dvorak, Chychrun).

Obviously in terms of trades everyone thinks of the Hall deadline deal, But Jason Demers was on Kyper and Bourne yesterday and mentioned that Chayka originally had a deal in place to get Toffoli, but Murellio(owner) nix’d it and essentially made the Hall trade behind Chaykas back cause he wanted to get the flashy guy on the trade market.

Other than that his ‘big’ trades are

-Crouse from Florida who was just drafted 10th overall for taking on Bollands contract and a 3rd pick
    – getting a 1st and 2nd for Handzal (3c at the time)
    – trading Deangelo and the 7th overall for Raanta and Stepen from NYR
    – Hjalmarsson for Murphy
    – Domi for Galchenyuk
    – Schmaltz for Perlini and Strome (who was looking like a major bust for the Yotes at the time)
    – Kessel for Galchenyuk and P.O Joesph.

Essentially, very Dubas like, if the team isnt competitive at the time, is able to weaponize cap space to take on picks and younger pieces and has a ability to realize when things arent meshing / working out and is able to flip younger pieces before they tank in value instead of holding on cause your scared they might become something (looking at you Treliving and Robertson).

His drafting record seems alright, Notable players who became NHLer’s from his 4 drafts include Keller, Chychrun, PO Joesph, Bahl, Emberson, Macceli and Hayton, who he reached on at 6 cause they were desperate for Center depth. 11 of his 32 picks made the NHL.

Essentially, i think everyone needs to relax, the guys literally Dollarama Dubas. The combine stuff gets kind of blown out of proportion, according to the Athletic the coyotes essentially brought in players to a mini combine where they had the head of fitness in to question prospects about their diet and exercise habits, The NHL was going to fine them, but since the team had a long history of Bankruptcy issues etc, then instead fined them with picks.

The guy was 26 and offered a GM job in a NHL front office, then the team got sold to a snake oil salesmen who literally couldnt make payments on time, and was essentially ran the team out of the city and was forced to sell the team and for whatever reason, 80% of people seem to put it all on Chayka.

  19. Ok-Meet2850

Intrigued seeing Chayka heavily sold as the modern analytics type. This is obviously critical but it seems like the best management teams combine analytics with other analysis and approaches. I don’t think analytics tell you what players are like psychologically or how to motivate them, or what kind of fight they bring. So without a strong front office around the new GM, hard to know what the whiz kid approach might bring.

That said, everything is rumours and this is all speculation.

  20. SapphireGoat_

What was the original knock on Chayka in AZ? Ownership limitations ?

  21. WallopJones

Chayka might turn out ok, but I thinks it’s pretty telling how weak the list of candidates for this job is

  22. I stopped watching earlier in the season so I haven’t really been following a lot of the developments and just planned to see what the team looked like at the start of the next season and decide if I was going to watch or not. I really have no idea who any of these guys are so I have no opinion.

I was fantasy booking it to be Sundin for GM with Gilmour as the coach and Clark as an assistant. Hell, bring in Potvin as a goalie coach!

  23. Mango2149

If the GM is supposed to be an analytical wiz I’d want either a proven track record or a PhD. Chayka sounds like Dubas 2.0 with that business school bachelors.

  24. MatthewsStache91

‘Mike Gillis is already hired and working in the background’ – this sub

    😂😂

  25. Yellow2345

The Dubas hate in this thread is as bad as the Marner hate.
