Toronto is warning as to what happens when you ignore corsi. Last year, they were bad, but thought their window was still open. They went all in–trading 1sts for depth players–and now they're paying the price.
Shannon your take is right. The Leafs built a team to play magnificent regular season hockey. The principle was to maintain a high octane offence and outscore opponents. Defence was only important to add to the offence. Goaltending was not important because the puck would be in the other end most of the game.
Where management was mistaken was thinking this would work in the playoffs. And once they saw the need to have playoff players, the Leafs starting selling off future assets in the belief they only needed one or two players to add truculence to their team. Last season they knew they were losing Marner and tossed everything they could for a shot at the Cup. Leaving the team devoid of assets.
I would not expect a turnaround soon. The slow and old defence is getting slower and older. Matthews has a chronic injury and will never be a 50 goal guy. Too many NMCs limiting the team's ability to make major deals.
They have no culture, they print "Honour. Pride. Courage" on the back of their collars in the inside but the franchise has none of it, it's a deep rot. Winning has never actually mattered to the people owning the team. It's why the result is always the same even though the have new GM's and new players and coaches.
Been a Leafs fan since 1962, my heart was broken in 2021 then a couple of weeks ago Pelley shot it and finished it. Now I have to pick a new favorite, a team closer to my time zone, either the Habs or the Bs, At least I won't have to stay up late to watch home games 🙂

imagime if you are the next prospective hire for the leafs at either GM or DOHO and you hand pelley your plan on how to fix the leafs now say that it's 25 people you interview seems to me that pelley as an analytics guy would have all the information he needs to do both jobs himself so i'm expecting his next hire will be an AGM bobble head figure in the likeness of himself

Can't keep Berube, this team doesn't have the mentally for his style. Pelley needs to be hands off and the new Pres and gm combo better have full control. Hire a Boudreau to get the vibes up and maybe get in the playoffs for a year or two, then make the decision for direction.
Get what you can for Nylander and see if that return kickstarts a serious retool….trade Matthews if it doesn’t look like an upward trajectory after that.

That's good that Toronto has a curse applied by Steve Stavro. You have people asking him to donate to a charity after he purchased the team as he was a smart businessman and most importantly he had a non-anglo name.
Toronto could have the top players and still lose as the betting industry is doing their absolute best to thoroughly embarrass that useless team.

Not that broken. There is parity in the league. It’s hard to win. Over 10 years they’ve gone against Tampa, Boston, and Florida. Tough league. Just make the playoffs. It’ll be okay. But maybe just okay. GLG
Toronto has 1 option and that is a complete rebuild. Anything else will be a slow decline into oblivion and at least 5-10 years to be relevant again. They should trade Mathews for young and 1st rounders and rebuild now. If now then accept this is as good as its going to be for a decade. Thats not speculation thats a guarantee. They have nothing coming up and need to draft a new team and that takes years.
Matthews is simply proving his haters right. hes a low energy, low care individual. he's not a guy you rally behind. they have no heart.
