Sundin will eventually walk into the President of hockey operations role when he "advises" that MLSE fire Chayka some time in year 2 of this front office lineup. All of this of pre-determined design for Mats to gain two years of real front office experience with no fear of being fired since he will not be in the actual hot seat while the immediate outlook is likely bleak. Why the machinations? Chayka got the job because he is certain to screw up. First boner move out of the gate? Keeping the head coach in place to guarantee the next two seasons deliver the malaise needed to encourage the non-movement Leafs to seek trades and sprout into assets and major cap room. Sundin will end up at the top of the Leaf hierarchy with a fist full of draft picks and prospects as the current roster of players with value is peeled off one by one, just in time for the arrival of McDavid. This hire is a brilliant example of a corporate strategy that acknowledges a fallow forecast for the near future and sets about surmounting a contractual inability to alter that course by embracing failure to change the game. It eliminates the Marner scenario where stars turn into assets with diminishing value should they fail to re-sign as well as move soft no-move hands incapable of long playoff runs. All this with a scapegoat who likely came cheap in place and the once and future King of the Leafs standing close by in the wings to take command of a brighter field of battle. Where will Pelley stand in all of this when the dust clears? Safely in the C-Suite of MLSE with a fat raise, unburdened by authority over the Leafs as Mats no longer needs a corporate minder to talk with ownership.

This is a major blunder by Keith Pelley. Actually there are two blunders here: first telling White that he will not be hired and to walk. and then second hiring Chayka instead of White. The Leafs need to improve their asset management and White did a very good job back in Dallas which is one of the primary reasons that Dallas is sort of knocking on the door to advance to the Stanley Cup finals in a few years. Chayka will only be trading away a lot of good young talented prospects and top picks to obtain old veterans that are on the decline.
