Unserious team run by unserious people. At this point, I honestly wonder if their internal projections show that they’d lose revenue if they ever win a Stanley cup because I have to believe at this point, its intentional.
John Chayka was no where close to the top of my list but you gotta give better and more realistic examples than Julien Brisebois, Chris MacFarland, Eric Tulsky and Kelly McCrimmon for other names they should have went after instead.
Usually I think this guy is way too harsh on the Leafs but can’t really disagree with this one. Pelley is a disaster.

Jonas’ solution is simply to hire a GM from successful NHL teams that are currently in the playoffs. Why didn’t they think of that!

Most of the article is a fair criticism, but Jonas’ point about Chayka picking Hayton instead of Hughes is a stupid point. Hughes went 8th in the draft, the first 7 teams all skipped him.
There’s only one forward in the rest of the 1st round that has more points than Hayton does right now, so I’d actually argue it was a fairly good pick. Sure you’d hope you take Hughes, Bouchard, or Dobson instead, but there’s still something to basically getting the best forward remaining.
He’s also skipping over the fact the coyotes had the worst ownership in the sport during this time period. The blame for the Coyotes failures rests in a bunch of places, Chayka is partially to blame but this article just feels like a hit piece lol

I had way more faith in Shanny than I do in Pelley, and he has WAY more responsibility.
At least with Shanny there was clear direction, you knew what the plan was.
With Pelley it’s a complete unknown, and the little that we do know, are universally agreed upon as bad.
This is actually a genius secret double-switch plan. They realize the team is completely screwed, so they bring in Chayka to fail spectacularly, and blow the whole thing up. Then they can fire him, start over from scratch, and hire the guy they really wanted all along to build the next wave. Right, right?

Its interesting how Ed Rogers is escaping the blame for hiring Pelley.
How does Rogers let Pelley keep his job when he explains to him that I listened to an ex player with CTE who gave me fond memories of watching this team in the early 2000s to run an Original 6 franchise.
The franchise with the resources to hire the best in the world have instead taken Tie Domis advice to hire his friends and ex teammates. This is on Ed Rogers for thinking Pelley had anywhere near the acumen to run 1 let alone multiple pro sports teams.
They are operating like the greedy corporation that Rogers is.
From the outside looking in, there is no material difference between this duo and Dubas + Shanahan in 2016. Everything you and I can say about these two will come down to fluff; they have their own track records in business (Chayka) and hockey IQ (Chayka and Sundin).
Chayka seems like a smart shithead. Sundin we know as a classy and savvy guy, who’s also totally green in terms of managerial experience. Pretty similar to the Dubas + Shanahan equation. Still this tells us nothing about how either will perform in signings, trades, or leadership.
I’m cautiously optimistic, simply out of the fact that Pelley has said the organization will emphasize analytics.

Pelley seems like one of those guys whose main skill is to be pleasant and regurgitate cliche talking points in a large, bureaucratic organization. But if you asked him to do something simple but useful, like fix a clogged drain, you know you’d end up with water everywhere and have to call a plumber to repair what he’s done.
I don’t know much about team ops, the search, etc. I just want to know why the rush to sign a GM just as the 1st round of playoffs wraps up? There’s time; I’m sure there are at least a few more teams looking to make front office changes and are waiting to see who’s available. Was there a strong push for clubs to sign Chayaka? Doubt it; he’s been out of the league since COVID. So why the pomp, circumstance and panic to sign a GM that may not have the resume another candidate may have that’s yet to become available?
It’s an interesting choice to say the least but the post mortem on this team on day 1 is so tiring. I feel like people just want to be miserable about this.
There’s plenty to say about his draft record overall but I can’t take any article seriously that brings up « passing on Quinn Hughes » with 8 years of hindsight. Six teams passed on Quinn Hughes including the team that picked after Arizona. Hayton was a small reach at #5 but if you want to follow draft rankings, then they would have picked Zadina…

I’ve said this for years, the Leafs drought will end up making the Cubs former 108 year drought look like child’s play. The Leafs are going to surpass that.
I think I need need to come to terms with fact that Ontario is uniquely untalented from leadership perspective- at a cultural level.
It’s all nepotism and golf failsons the whole way down. Everywhere. The biggest predictor of ascension to leadership roles is having a cottage in muskoka.

Yes he’s not a perfect GM but are there any out there? I feel like you could write a hit piece on almost any single GM in the league.
He say’s he rather bet on a more “qualified” GM figuring out how to win, but didn’t we just try an experienced GM? I feel like he’s advocating hiring one of the old boys club GMs.
Look how that’s working for the Kings with Ken Holland or the Oilers with Stan Bowman. Both are running the team into the ground.
Deeply unserious and lots are finding other teams to follow.

The Leafs really aren’t a serious organization. Sucks cause I think they were on the cusp with Dubas/Keefe of breaking through.
But I guess most people here prefer’d Tre/Berube and now they get to keep Berube!
