This has been discussed to death. Drafting isn’t why Fitzgerald should have been fired, the 20/20 hindsight is so boring to still have to talk about. I mean everyone talks about Logan Stankoven but what about Knies? He was drafted 57th, surely every GM should be fired for not recognizing that undeniable talent.

Downplaying Fondrk breaking his femur is egregious here and downright disrespectful to the player. He’s also an 18 year old on a fairly stacked Boston University team.

I get it, we want for Mehta to be an improvement over Fitzgerald in every way, we wan our GM to be the ideal GM to lead us back to the promised land but these pot shots at Fitzgerald’s drafting are just lazy for anyone writing about the team other than Novo, which would be expected from him.

I posed a question about Chase Stillman recently and was basically met with the same « shut up Fitz sucks » nonsense without actually getting an answer

    > The Chase Stillman pick. Often used as an example of how awful Fitz was at drafting. Yet I look at players taken around the same time and find myself going « …Bueller? » None of the later picks taken from Samoskevitch at 24 until the end of the first round has made an impact on for their team. You have to go into the second round to find players who are even consistently on an NHL roster before getting into the bona fide players like Stankoven, Doan, and Knies. Obviously any team who didn’t take them at the time would want them now but that’s with hindsight. So in all honesty, who should we have expected Fitz to take at 29? Doesn’t seem like there were many better options and saying we should’ve taken Knies 29th for example isn’t a good answer because no team had their eye on him that high. That’s not a failure specifically of Fitz

Shane Wright is a borderline bust right now and I see picking Nemec as preparing for the future since Dougie isn’t going to be here forever. It’s not BPA like Cooley but drafting for future need isn’t a sin. We also had good center depth in the ’22 draft. Nico, Jack, McLeod, Zacha before he was traded, Boqvist was playing center I think

If he wasn’t bad at the other stuff, you could excuse his draft record.

But him having bad drafts in addition to his bigger screwups, just compounds the mess he made during his time here.

The question you have to ask is did they select the best player? Other than Jack Hughes., other players drafted later turned out to be better. It’s just bad scouting., a disaster for any sports team.

I’m excited for Mehta’s take on the drafting process. The guy who had Bratt in his top 10 list is going to cook, I feel it 🔥
