Dominating possesion and SOGs gives the impression of dominating the entire game, but just like in the Olympics gold medal game, the score remained tied. The game was tied the entire time. Bolts could shoot but not convert. Was luck on the Habs' side? Luck is everywhere, the game-changer though is the hability to make good use of luck when it presents itself. The Habs stayed resillent and once the Bolts slighty lowered their guard they fought back aggressively to score the game-winner (just like the Americans at the Olympics). So it's an awful feeling because you feel robbed but in reality it was close game for a close series. The Lightning played well, and I don't think there are blatant mistakes to point out against its players and coaches – they did a fantastic job all the way.
What is left to do now is less technical but more psychological: keep the spirits up, salute the hardwork done, congratulate the players and coaches, and be grateful for partaking in this godlike series. To overcome fate and clinch a win you gotta accept that defeat is always imminent and luck is a great factor, but in the long run, you're thus able to concentrate on playing the game the best you can without being hunted by the fear of losing or choking – you're actually able to enjoy even more those decisive games and thrive over them. That's called a winner's mentality: playing for the win, not suffering for it.
18% is still 18% . Its not 0. That s it. Luck playes a huge role in everything in life and in small margin pro sports even more so.
Great video. Your analysis is very complete. I appreciate fans who can keep a calm head and objectively analyze a game, and give credit where it’s due instead of just resorting to "X player sucks" or "trade/fire this guy" types of rambling out of frustration. There's been a ton of good and bad on both sides of this series and it's important to put it all together.
As a Habs fan, I'd just say… keep your head up high. The Bolts have had a crazy run lately, and all giants eventually fall… some harder than others… but the Lightning are a well-managed team, so they’re still competitive many years after 3 straight Cup finals. Look at the Hawks: three Cups in six seasons, then two quick 1st rounds exits and they haven't "legitimately" made the playoffs since (they qualified due to the Covid bubble, but wouldn't have made it otherwise).
I actually find myself thinking every year will be the one where Tampa takes a significant drop due to wear, tear, and an aging core, but they keep pushing back the clock. We also have to keep in mind that the Bolts didn't have their HOF-worthy franchise defenseman for the entire series and it would be crazy to think that with him on the ice this wouldn't have given Tampa a serious edge over the Habs. Sure, it’s frustrating to see your team get taken out in the first round four years in a row when they're seen as a contender, but these were all against incredible teams who respected them and had to give everything to win. The way I see it, facing the Bolts brings out the best in every opponent because they are the target everyone wants to measure themselves against since they're loaded with Cup-winning players and remain an extremely well-coached, dangerous, and experienced team.
I don't know how long Tampa still has in them before their age catches up and they have to reset/retool/rebuild, but this series showed that they're still in it and should be for at least a few more years. Cheers to all Bolts fans for an incredible 2 weeks, this series will teach more to this Habs team than any other series could have, and will certainly help them improve much faster than expected. 🤝
Lightning defense was top tier shutting down Canadiens forwards… Yet in 9 shots Canadiens had two goals. Tampa though had extended o time, they didn't generate that many top tier scoring chances and the ones they did generate Montreal defense and goaltending shut them down. If I were a tampa fan I'd levy the blame at Goaltending and top forwards. Holding a team to 9 shots shows the d was doing their job.
I know this won't make you feel any better, but I want to add another comment to add some perspective. 29 shots is big compared to 9, but it is still a reasonable night's work for an NHL goalie. So, yes, Dobes' performance was great, but it wasn't other worldly. I'm old enough to remember Patrick Roy's 60 save performance against Boston in 1994. Even though Montreal didn't manage to generate much offense they still did a good job at limiting shots on net and second chances (i.e. rebound chances). Many of Tampa's shots were what Steve Dangle would call chest muffins.
Bro just got many new followers from the Habs fanbase 😅. You are good indeed. Love your composure and analysis of the game. Sorry for the outcome of the game. Tampa should have won tonight. I guess the hockey gods spoke and wanted the Habs to win.
Generational goaltending from both sides and the power of friendship. Hard to beat. Montreal should have closed out Game 6 just as much as the Bolts deserved to win Game 7
The Montreal Canadians put 3 shots in the net that what counts in the long run. No one cares that 3 times more shots hit the Canadian's goaltender just tells you how good this goaltender was. I agree it was a heartbreaking lose for Tampa. I would like to thank Tampa for a well fought series. Nail biter all the way.
im 71 years old saw the habs win 11 cups and habs vs boston in the 70s was has close as that.
you will get over it
Game 7s are always a coin toss.
“Can’t win most games with 9 shots on goal, but you can win this one”
every shot on net is a scoring chance especially in the playoffs. You can say this series should have been over in 6 in Montreal as the HABS were the better team 3 posts etc and some heroics by Vas on Demidov the POs are never about who deserves to win or who played like the better team it is about perseverance and determination and the HABS were the better team overall GO HABS GO reach out if you need info I have access to season tickets and can give you the run down on where to stay what to do etc we would be happy to get you in touch with tickets for a game and give you a great place to stay that is walking distance to everything
When you shoot towards net sometimes good things happen and it did this game! Have a good summer!
Wow!! An aged cheddar, a soft brie, a fine camembert…all goes well with this whine.
Only 9 shots on net that resulted in two of the ugliest goals we've score all year. The hockey gods were definitely smiling on our Habs tonight. The best news is that we have ourselves a bonafide, top-drawer, Grade A goalie. Dobes flat out stole this game for us.
Canadians had the same feeling after the gold medal Olympic game….. bitter pill
Your coverage was excellent. We deserved to win the series, and no one could argue that the Bolts deserved to win game seven. Go Habs Go!
I'm a Habs fan but I really respect you for your content! Obviously really happy to see the Habs win but I really do appreciate your work here! 🙂
I pop in once a yr minimum,on the day Tampa gets eliminated or when the panthers take down Tampa in a series barring that …I forgot you existed until I watch the lightening lose ….but they didn't lose normally no,vagasil loses it for his team in historical fashion
Nice video putting respect where it’s due. We did get lucky with both of those shots and I understand both pov’s but both goalies were wild during the series
Lightning played an excellent game and were the better team overall, but I don’t believe in the idea of a “lucky” or “undeserved” win. If a team wins, it’s because at least one player made the difference — and that player is still a part of the team.
It’s funny how you almost never hear people call it a “lucky” win when a forward is the one who makes a huge difference. If a team wins 3–2 and one player scores all three goals, it’s considered a great win. But if a team wins 2–1 because the goalie has an unbelievable performance, suddenly it’s “luck.”
Sometimes forwards score six goals and still lose (like last night’s Colorado/Minnesota game). Other times they score only one or two and still win. Every victory has a hero, and that hero is part of the winning team.
Dobes absolutely carried them in this one, and they’ll owe him for that. But there will also be nights when he lets in a couple of bad ones and the team still finds a way to win. That’s how it balances out.
It was Tampa’s job to figure out how to beat him, and they couldn’t. At least they left everything on the ice, and that’s all you can really ask of your team.
Hey, you got lucky goals too, like off Hagel's face to win a game.
Ooof 😂😂😂 go Habs go. Vasy stole one but he needed to steal 2. Doby stole gm7.
The bounce off the back wall was planned.
The broken stick, non-icing, and then the pile of snow, non-icing; that was tough on you guys.
Your Bolts have hurt our Habs for a few years now. Good luck with your rebuild, probably about two to three years from now.
I said before the series started in a comment on some other video that these two teams are exceptionally well matched. Offensively, Montreal played like dog water for much of game 7, but they brought a tight defensive game nonetheless where their offense lacked, and Dobes stood on his head. I think what you saw last night was proof that hockey is feral and untamed, and you cannot domesticate the luck and unpredictability out of it. The puck somehow managed to bounce the Habs way despite Tampa throwing everything they had at them to stack the deck in their favor.
I don't think asking why or how is going to come up with any answer that makes sense. Somehow, the way the series went, it doesn't surprise me that it was decided by an odd outcome. It is JUST LIKE intensity and pressure to respond unpredictably when it builds like that.
I can understand Tampa fans not being very excited about being on the shaft end of this one, but this truly was two very capable teams playing very elite-level, exciting hockey through seven games. It kept getting better and better. This could have been a cup final as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'm a bit concerned that the Habs may have psychologically gassed themselves or prematurely spent their adrenaline as a result of the way that series went.
As a Habs fan, I don't even know how to process this game. I'll just say that this is one of the best playoff series I've ever witnessed and I'm thankful for Tampa as one of our greatest rivals. I hate Hagel but I also LOVE Hagel lol.
Montreal's defense is really underrated. They regularly block shots and can bring it the other way. Then, when Dobes catches fire like this, he stops everything coming at him, which makes their job easier. The Lightning kept shooting at his chest because he is positionally sound. I'm going on 60, and it is one of the best series I have ever watched.
I'm a Habs fan, but I was there after each game for your comments, good job!
Lifelong HABS fan here that goes to Bolts games several times a year in Tampa. Goalies made this series. I was in your seat after game 6. You are a class act my friend, keep your head high. One goal differential in every game was intense. I will be down for more games next year.
You just don't understand hockey Bro. Montreal bro here…we've been doing this for ever. Y ou just don't watch Montreal's Canadians games. That's how we crusch it…every time!!!
Garbage goals happen ALL THE TIME. Even Tamba scores some of them often. Game 6, Vasilevsky stoled the game and game 7, Dobes got it done. Montreal won only 1 of the 3 overtime periods. OVERALL, Montreal was the better team in the series. Fun fact, Tampa only led in all of the games for just over 7 minutes. I know you are stunned but at the end, it’s just a game and move on buddy! Better days will come. Canadiens deserve to move on to round 2. Go habs Go! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The Habs are like the Yankees in baseball, the history, the championships, there's just something there and you should never try to understand it.. it is what it is
why so sad, you won a cup in 2021, some teams never got the chance … i mean ,that's life
like we say, it's not quantity, it's quality 😉
the goal should have gone to Mozer though 😉
Kutch might be a tad bit overrated in the series..
