Rightly furious, brutal missed call, linesman decided the game

  2. thatguy11

Welp, we’ve learned whining about the refs does nothing, soooooo, get over it like the rest of us. Because ya know what? You’re right… and it still doesn’t matter!

  3. Consumed1979

They should call their arena « The House ».

  4. paranoidhands

looked like eichel had the step at the hash marks on the slomo replay

  5. AJWilson55

Not saying it wasn’t a missed call but it was waved off early enough for the Ducks to adjust. Lacombe gave up on the play and the coverage wasn’t good in front of the net. Play to the whistle.

  6. Barrelled2186

The logic Eichel trailing might overtake, lol. He did in fact not overtake. Just let them lob it in from their own D zone.

    🥴

  7. Think_Ad1534

That was so bad…. I looked away because I thought it was icing too only to see my boys getting scored on. Shit happens I guess gotta look forward to the next game.

  8. chicknsnadwich

Ducks should be furious that nobody is covering either Knight on that side of the ice

  9. shadownet97

That should’ve been icing if we’re going with consistency but we all know the officiating is never consistent.

  10. ulteriormolotov

Why can you not challenge a blown icing call same as offsides? Dumb

  11. This Was The exact right call at the exact right time. Eichel had the lead at the dot /hash marks and that’s where the ref called it off. Doesn’t matter what happens after that

  12. mitigated_audacity

People who don’t understand hybrid icing showing their ass here.

Eichel beat him to the dot. You make the call at the dot on who is getting there first. Eichel was first to the dot.

  13. Top_Contract_4910

series I am the least interested in tbh so i’m glad i can see some condensed clips on reddit.

  14. AHockeyTalkie

It’s behind the redline for the dump, but at the hashmarks it’s close and Eichel looks to have a step before Lacombe leans in. With the praise his skating gets he is ragging it a little without getting to that puck. Closer call than most the reactions IMO

  15. Nier_Perfect

Even though it should’ve been icing the Ducks also should’ve played defence.

  16. th3bodmon

I thought it was a bad call until you see the frame where he made his judgement.

Still don’t agree, but it’s not as bad once you notice.

  17. Happyradish532

Lol, now it’s our turn to tell them to quit their bitching.

« BS calls are just part of the game »

    Right ducks?

  18. Ladymistery

I don’t blame them, but play to the whistle gents.

  19. The rule is what sucks, not what Vegas did.

Something something « race to the dot » instead of actually racing to the puck/the play/etc…

In theory you could yeet it into the back left corner and as long as your forward raced off the bench (2nd period) and got down to the right dot, that’s a legal play and that’s stupid as fuck.

Edit because I suck at space bar vs « b » on mobile.

  20. the4ndy1i

Lacombe went from playoff mvp to selling the game

  21. Feisty_Dirt4191

It’s a borderline call, the Anaheim player sorta packed it up, they’ll learn from that

  22. mitigated_audacity

That look on Quenneville’s face is the look you give when your assistant coach didn’t coach the opposing team and create most of their systems.

  23. 20yr Hockey Canada Level 4 official here.

    Good wave off.

Eichel was carrying significantly more speed and was only slightly behind at the point where the determination is made. If the ducks defender didn’t box him out, I think Eichel could have played the puck before it even crossed the line. If the ducks defender keeps course toward the puck, he too would have played the puck right at or before the line.

  24. Litt3rang3r-459

I’m not sure how to feel as a half Vegas half Anaheim fan 🫩

  25. TwoForHawat

This is called correctly. It’s one of those quirks of the hybrid icing rule, but it is clearly the right call.

The rule on icing is that when the first player (on either team) reaches the faceoff dot, the linesman makes a judgement call on who he *thinks* will get to the puck first. A lot of people think that it’s just the player who reaches the dot first (and that’s understandable because they do sometimes call it that way). Just because a defending player gets there first does not mean it’s an icing, because the linesman is supposed to make a judgment on whether the defender would be overtaken if they both had to race all the way to the puck. Essentially the idea is, if there was no hybrid icing and neither player held up, would the defender get to the puck before the forechecker?

In the clip here, when Eichel and Lacombe get to the dot, it absolutely looks like Eichel would get to the puck first if he kept his stride going. At that point, the linesman should (and did) call off icing. Eichel slows up because he thinks he’s more likely to come away with possession if he lets Lacombe go into the boards first and checks him, and he turns out to be right because he’s able to disrupt Lacombe’s clearing attempt.

Quenneville can be furious all he wants, but this was a somewhat rare case of the linesman actually calling a close icing play correctly.

  26. bluenoser135

I really don’t think the icing call is clearly a bad call, it’s dicey for sure, but at the point the call was made the defenseman had completely stopped going for the puck and was only trying to hold eichel up, who was shoulder to shoulder with him at that point it could have gone either way and if that’s what people solely blame the loss on there’s a lot more actionable things you can look to improve.
Why was Barbashev wide open on his half of the ice, why did you go 0/4 on the powerplay, why did you pass on the open net, etc.

  27. AP0LLOBLU

No way, knight beat him to the puck. For no touch icing to occur, the ducks player would need to be well in front. This wasn’t the case

  28. TLDR: The linesman’s call is justifiable.

    *Rule 81.1 – Icing*

*For the purpose of interpretation of the rule, there are two judgments required for « icing the puck ». The Linesperson must first determine that the puck will cross the goal line. Once the Linesperson determines that the puck will cross the goal line, icing is completed upon the determination as to which player (attacking or defending) would first touch the puck.* ***This decision by the Linesperson will be made by no later than the instant the first player reaches the end zone face-off dots with the player’s skate being the determining factor.*** *Should the puck be shot down the ice in such a manner that it travels around the boards and/or back towards the end zone face-off dots, the same procedure shall be in effect in that the Linesperson shall*
*determine within a similar distance as to who will have touched the puck first.*

***For clarification, the determining factor is which player would first touch the puck, not which player would first reach the end zone face-off dots.***

*If the race for the puck is too close to determine by the time the first player reaches the end zone face-off dots, icing shall be called.*

If I’m the linesman in the near corner, it certainly appears like Eichel is overtaking the defender and his skate beats him to the face-off dot. Eichel stops moving his feet at the dot which allows the defenders to regain position to get to the puck first but the play has already advanced beyond the dot. The linesman had already made the call to wave icing off because Eichel arrives at the dot first and initially appears to be most likely to arrive at the puck first.

  29. Every-Citron1998

I get the Ducks player got to the puck first, but the linesman waived off the icing when it looked like the Vegas player was winning the race at the hash marks.

It was a close call that benefited the Knights but it wasn’t a bad call.

  30. We play all the way to the whistle in Nevada. Also, VGK fans don’t forget your Venmo for game 2. Go Knights!

  31. DEATHCATSmeow

Do I need my eyes examined or something? Because it looks to me like the Vegas player beat out the icing. Definitely doesn’t look like as a blatant brutal missed call as some of you are saying

  32. Low_Laugh6550

Should of been called icing but it wasn’t, ducks have to be better and play until the whistle is blown, we are still such a young team with plenty of lessons to learn from this game. ducks are resilient and should be better next game! We also lost game one against edm because we took our foot off the pedal!

  33. gorillaphi

Icing or not you can’t leave a guy alone in the slot like that lol

  34. 33-sunshines

absolute sham of a call…the rule literally states a call needs to be made by the time the players reach the dots, its not a who gets to the dots first. Its who the referee deems is going to touch the puck first. So either the ref is blowing the whistle late on purpose or its just a blown call. Bullshit that the refs dictated the outcome of this game. VGK looked ass pretty much the entire game.

  35. iwasnotplanningthis

Knew it was Trouba right away. Seen this level of defensive excellence many times in New York.

  36. MiserableAssist4908

Rule 81.6 clearly states rules of icing do not apply to Vegas and Florida teams.

  37. mrchilly0

Seems like just a few more words in the rules make this a bit easier. IF the defending player makes a play at the offensive player to impede, icing is waved? Kind of similar to the goalie making a play for the puck negates icing. Someone better with words can write that better.

  38. Oasystole

How was that not icing? What was the justification for waving that off?
