‘According to sources in the league.’
    Alright.
Sounds very constructed. Let the Leafs’ new management team sit down with players and present their vision. Then we’ll know more.

  2. Fuck off with the click bait headline. Is it really any surprise some players don’t want to play there?

The actual quote in the article says: *“Matthews has two years remaining on his contract, but still isn’t sure if he’ll be back in Toronto in the fall, according to league sources.”*

So Chris Johnston sets himself up perfectly, if Matthews leaves, he looks like a genius who called it early. If Matthews stays, it’s easy to walk it back as “he was just unsure.”

Toronto media narratives like this are exhausting and I’m not even a fan.

With who they just hired to run the organization, I wouldn’t be surprised if quite a few players are unsure of continuing with them. Going to be some interesting contract negotiations.

The mountain out of a mole hill Sundin/Chayka thing is finally done (holy fuck our media is insufferable) so they have to float some new nonsense to dominate the sports news landscape here now.

Raptors are done, Jays suck, TFC is a reasonable surprise but them and CFL aren’t draws here so there ya go until World Cup/NHL draft after tonight

  5. CarlThe94Pathfinder

Why would he want to after the entire team basically left him for dead after getting hit by Gudas. Why would he want to play for that locker room?

  6. SillyMikey

What a disaster that team is. I really feel bad for them. We’ve been through our own bad period but it was never that bad. When you’re already down on the people they hired, it’s gonna be a long fucking decade for them.

If Marner makes it past 2nd round. I could see fomo increase.

  8. Alternate article title:

Athletic numbers down, fishes for clicks from desperate and worried Leaf fans

  9. AdvantageGreedy8011

Leafs cant handle it when there star player being talked about leaving but all for it when its oilers stars are being talked about.

  10. Whatever fuck him, not playing anywhere close to his contract, consistently doesn’t show up in playoffs. Just go full rebuild. He’ll never touch 69 goals again

  11. Not surprising at all. This is the same organization who made a player with the worst body language in the history of the NHL captain of their franchise. I’d want to get out of there too.

Gonna be a long, long rebuilt for Toronto.

  12. wellthatsyourproblem

    Regular season the guys a 10… playoffs he’s a 1.0.

  13. Brilliant-Shoe-568

Matthews, Tavares, and Woll for McDavid and Nurse

Remember when they hired his boyhood idol to make Matthews stay…. I wonder if we could get Shane Doan to say something to optimistic about how bright Doan things the future is at MLSE. :/

  15. Let’s call a spade a spade; this is a clickbait title and “league sources” giving such a vague report is dubious at best.

I think the interesting question being lost behind the clickbait is how do the players feel about Chayka given his mixed reputation. I’m especially interested to see how Chayka handles Shane Doan who’s probably respected by a lot of current and former players and is facing the possibility of being screwed over by Chayka again in less than a decade. Considering Chayka has some fences to mend, it’s a delicate situation to say the least.

As much as I’d like to see Matthews in a Wild jersey, the most likely scenario is always that he’ll stay with Toronto and that’s really where this story line should end until his contract either ends or is extended. I remember all the reckless speculation last summer about Kaprizov resigning and I’m bracing for it again with Quinn this summer, forget having to listen to that kind of noise start TWO YEARS before the contract even ends.

All y’all complain about the frequent leafs posts but don’t hesitate to chime in after falling for the bait news lmao

  17. Conscious-Donut

I too am unsure if I will return to work next year

  18. Aggressive_Ad_7010

let him go…dudes been a shell of his former self for 2 seasons now…if it’s still injury related then it don’t look like something that’s going to get better. get what we can can while some teams still think he will return to his scoring ways…

  19. He’s been gone for a while this shouldn’t surprise anyone

  20. Independent-Offer543

Bruh I’m tired of this it’s all a bunch of speculation and noise dressed up like somebody’s got real insider information

  21. distancetomars

This team is reminiscent of the 2020 Sabres. New GM, coach is being reviewed, stars are a bit disgruntled, no depth.

Either through the draft or FA, Leafs will make a big splash to help satisfy their end of the bargain with Matthews.

  22. Smooth-Evening-

At this point does anyone even care? Lol. Maybe in the fall we will.

  23. Jeez, did Tkachuk start a movement for Americans to leave Canada?

  24. magikarp-sushi

Ya I’m sure this is 100% based in truth and from his mouth

  25. TumbleweedDull6836

He does not like Chayka. Remember he is a Arizona guy. Chayka stabbed Mr Coyote Shane Doan in the back with that organization amongst numerous other things. Toronto is a disaster right now and is on the brink of all out inferno mode disaster. Quinn Hughes vibes here like with Vancouver.
