Si l’Avs remporte la coupe, Brent Burns la soulevant après 22 saisons usurpera-t-il la levée de Ray Borque après 21 saisons comme étant peut-être la plus grande levée de coupe de tous les temps ?

Definitely not. Ray Bourque is one of the greatest defensemen of all time, BB is not.

No. Burns is a great player but not even comparable

  3. rocky_mtn_hi

No because Bourque only played for the Bruins his whole career until he came to the Avs

  4. JellyPast1522

Both will be usurped when Jagr returns next year and at age 55 raises the cup as a Leaf!

  5. accairns131

Landeskog and Burns are cool, but they ain’t Sakic and Bourque cool.

  6. Bobcaygeon23

No. Because of Bourque’s aforementioned position as one of the all time greats (Top 3 for sure at worst) and because he was still a massive contributor to the run.

    Not even close.

Cool story. But not even close.

  8. modssonconos

Wouldn’t be close. Great story, great moment though.

    No

Ray Bourque was a much greater player than Brent Burns.

  10. HagelMcPointerov

Andreychuk would be a more apt comparison

  11. No. Bourque is a league above Burns. And I am a big fan of what Burns has done

That cup raise is historic not just based on Bourques talent status but also the fact Sakic let him raise and skate around with it first. Doesn’t happen often

Bourque was special because he was Ray Bourque, not because he was old. Andreychuk may have been even older (not sure exactly), but even with Homer goggles it doesn’t touch the second greatest D of all time finally lifting it in his last season.

Not even close..BB would be a cool story but Ray is Ray and this is stupid.

I have a werid feeling this might happen to Mcdavid, eventually gets traded to Avs or Vegas and wins cup…

Nah, love Burns, but he’s no Borque and if he bumps Kessel for the iron man title next season – it will only be cause the league blacklisted Kessel.

I can probably take a good guess at the age of this poster by this question. Handing it off to Burns would be a cool moment with a lot of parallels, but Bourque was just on another level. For one, he had multiple Norris Trophies, caught a few Hart votes, and was a first ballot HOFer. As good as Burns is, Bourque is one of the best ever. But the other huge difference is that Bourque had played his whole career in Boston, got to the Finals a few times, and could just never get over that hump. Boston adopted the Avs as their own team while he was there. That is how beloved he was as a player.

Think of it this way. A universally beloved player regarded as one of the best ever and who gave their career to one city gets traded to a contender and wins it before retiring. Say for example, Ovi doesn’t win the Cup with the Caps and gets traded somewhere where he does win it. The entire Caps fan base would be really happy, and he a great player loved by other fans in the league. Burns is close there, but there’s a reason we still see clips of the Bourque Cup raise 25 years later.

That scene is painful because that was the year the Blues finally got past the second round and into the conference finals. That said, this is still an iconic moment and am happy for the legend.

Even more iconic since Sakic gave him the honor of being the first to hoist the cup

To compare, cale makar is on pace to have a career similar to ray bourque points wise/team wise/awards wise. Ray bourque leaving was like if makar had never won a cup and never left the avs, but finally got traded to another team.

As a comparison to burns: makar has already well passed burns in career playoff points and goals, in about 70 fewer games. Burns’s is one of the better defenseman of the last era, and probably a HOF player because of the iron man streak, but not an all time great like bourque, and probably makar will be.
