  1. Pain Shannon…paaaaaaaain. Other fan bases do have it worse but man I just wanna see us be consistent in the right direction. I'm afraid we'll end up wasting Jack and Nico. That and Jack is cursed lmao.

  2. If they want to buy out Markstrom, they have to take a player to arbitration. Most likely it would be Cotter as his contract would be the cheapest and easiest to replace.

  3. Tom Fitzgerald plummeted this franchise. scapegoated Lindy Ruff, traded Toffoli away for two worthless draft picks, traded for Markstrom and put together a goaltending tandem that is a combined 70+ years old, traded for Kovacevic then immediately signed him since then he’s been bad and taking away Nemec’s spot in the lineup, trade for Timo Meier and then watch him play baby soft and pay him $8.8 million a year to score as much as Dawson Mercer, hire Sheldon Keefe who has led terrific Leafs regular seasons and have him run a boring old school trapping style for a team with two Hughes brothers and Jesper Bratt.

Mehta is a man I have pity for, he’s handed a team with a good small group of players and trash that surrounds them, he has to somehow get rid of Dougie Hamilton, Kovacevic, keep Nemec happy or trade him away, fix the goaltending, get Nico a real winger to play with, build a new fourth line, and in that allotment of time also get Quinn Hughes so his brothers aren’t enticed to go and leave to play with him. It’s a nightmare

  4. As a devil fan for the last 25 years and someone who’s watched like every game in the last 10 years…we are cooked and it’s not getting better be4 it gets worse.
They physically do not have the assets to dig themselves out of the albatross contracts stacked up while remaining competitive AND also acquiring the couple pieces we actually need…and when we can the “young core full of bargain contracts” will be expired and they ain’t rooks no more…it also doesn’t help that because we flip flop so often by season we have maybe 2 good prospects in our pool…genuinely haven’t looked this bad since Kovy left us to go home

  5. I would really like the Devils to trade for Robertson, they can't keep pairing Hughes & Bratt with a 3rd or 4th line player. Knies would also be a good target, maybe move Meier for him if possible. If they don't trade Meier, put him on RW for god's sake.
Would like to see these lines
    Robertson-Hughes-Bratt
    Knies-Hishier-Mercer or
    (Mercer-Hischier-Meier)
    Gritsyuk-Glass-Brown
    Cotter-Bjugstad-Tsplakov

  6. not if jack and luke cant stay. Devils need size with speed. They need a pwf for jack line nad snp not more bottom 6. they are making a hughe mistake trading nemec over dougie and silayev. buying out markstorm is another mistake and disaster

  7. The need to trade Hamilton asap, I am not concerned about overall return, make him part of a big package if that's what it takes.

Also if Silayev is ready, they need to trade Dillion to make room.
Kovi could be flipped mid season, also Edwards could be a good call up.
D Pairs I want to see
    Silayev-Nemec
    L.Hughes-Pesce
    Siegenthaler-Edwards

  8. Devils keys to the game:

    A) Luke Hughes needs to live up to his contract and start producing like a #1 DMan
    B) Top forwards need to find more consistent scoring, Nico/Bratt/Timo all had periods with long point droughts last season
    C) Bottom six needs to win their matchups on most nights. Too many games where the 4th liners had a -2 or worse
    D) Markstrom needs to find the fountain of youth

  9. No breakdown of the Devils last season is near complete without mentioning this one fact

An atrocious 7-17-2 (.308 p%) n their divisional games is what sunk them. That's a worse points % in their own division than any other team in the NHL by a wide margin.

Their 35-20-1 (.634 p%) against the rest of the NHL is quite strong. This includes a winning record against the Atlantic Division; it wasn't the result of simply feasting on the soft bottom/midpack in the West.

It's an open question why they stunk in rivalry games. Keefe has historically underperformed in divisional games with Toronto after his first season in both the regular season and playoffs. It's possible that he is not as adaptive as a coach when the opposing bench boss focuses more on playing against his system and the team's style, strength, and weaknesses.

It's also possible that the team has a culture of quit that carries into games where the opponent makes them themselves extra hard to play against in rivalry games. The culture of quit was evident in how they massively faded for extended periods the previous two seasons and how rare they were ever to come back when playing from behind this season. The culture of quit is probably the biggest reason Tom Fitzgerald, a man who never filled roster holes when needed during the regular season and breached professional etiquette by asking players to welch on trade protection, was canned.

Talent wise, this team should have been a playoff team capable of a deep run the past 3 seasons but fell short. The injury narrative is not even close to the main reason for that other than last season's playoffs where something like 75% of the blueline plus Jack Hughes were injured.

Mehta needs to fix the culture first and foremost. He might want to hold Keefe accountable for the unacceptably bad division record, but I can see another side to that story. I don't think he needs to massively overhaul the roster unless, when he peers under the hood, he uncovers unfixable sources of locker room issues. On paper, the Devils only need a few tweaks to be a cup contender next season. Jack Hughes became a man after the Olympics and, hopefully, inspires the rest of the team. They do not have as flush a cap space picture as many teams, but Fitzgerald finally unloading the Palat contract (fleecing the Islanders) as a last act does give them some room. They have one too many RhD's and probably need a top-6 winger. If they trade Hamilton and keep Nemo, they could probably add their. If they keep Hamilton and trade Nemec, they probably won't, but could reload on futures and depth.

  10. I'm probably in the minority but if we found a deal to ship the Hughes brothers out and get something similar in return kind of like a change in scenery type deal I would do it I don't know why but I feel like the team has been beholden to making them happy above all even if it means not being able to fill out the roster hence offering Luke 9 million even though he was nowhere worth that when we signed him and now seemingly being urged to go after Quinn even if it means giving up a stupid amount for a guy at a huge cap hit that we don't really need. Not saying he wouldn't be immediately our best defenseman but he is just one guy and his type of player we have in Luke already everybody acting like not getting Quinn was such a mistake I thought it was smart of Fitzgerald not giving up Nemec

  11. I’m very optimistic that Sunny Mehta will have a sober view of this team’s future.

Keep us young, growing, and play to our strengths. Stop making win-now moves and establish a solid foundation for sustained playoff success to give us the most opportunities for Hischier and Hughes to hoist a cup.

  12. One of the biggest indictments against this core is how they all, but mostly Timo and Bratt, disappear when Jack gets hurt. They both can be streaky already but it's like once the pressure is really on they cannot deliver.

  13. Rogalski OUT! He is behind Devils mediocrity at goalie position. Blackwood and Wedgewood rejuvenated without him, Markstrom regressed, Daws has stopped developing. Kicking Rogalski would be a step in right direction

  14. I’m sure Sunny Mehta looks at this team from more than just a points-per-game or points-per-million-dollars perspective. He’ll dig in analytically to see which players complement which other players. I don’t know how that will play with everyone, but I do foresee Simon Nemec sticking around, but maybe with more of a Bratt-like rather than Hughes-like salary, and maybe a shorter term bridge deal until they get out from under Markstrom’s cap hit. I do NOT anticipate a push to get Quinn Hughes after Fitz wore a “Quite the Hughes” jersey at the start of last month. The risk of the distraction would be an ill-calculated one. Coaching staff will be interesting. I don’t think goalie coach Rogalski remains, and whoever comes in is specifically chosen as compatible with Markstrom. No idea who that might be (Patrick Roy could be an interesting gamble).

  15. I would love to know what the new GM would have done with the trade opportunities it seems we missed out on. As a fan the number one thing I want to see added to the roster is straight up dawgs. This could be the softest Devils team I’ve seen in my lifetime. Also glad that sweater is being retired, it was fun for a bit.

  16. One of my favorite chatGPT past times is to make new sweaters for the teams, the Devils have a fun color pallet to choose from.

  17. The East is going to be interesting. You can make an argument for why every team should make the playoffs, but half won't. There really aren't any obvious bottom teams like in the west. It will be interesting to see who ends up at the bottom next year. Leafs, Bruins, Pens?
