Worst officiated game I’ve ever seen in my life. Absolutely abysmal
If I had told you in October, that the Flyers would be contesting a 2nd round playoff game with all of, Hathaway/Glendennig/Grundstrom playing not insignificant minutes, you would have offered and/or paid how much for what I was smoking?
And if this iteration of the Flyers, (with a 19 year old who recently fell to us at #6, and who was noticeable for much of the night, along with a 21 year old who also recently fell to us at #7, and was occasionally noticeable) can provide a genuine test against a Canes team that will likely win 2, 3 or possibly 4 games against a wagon of an Avs team, then I don't think all hope is lost, just yet.
Hockey is no longer a man's sport, some players now simulate exactly like in soccer for a penalty.. And with the insane number of minor penalties being handed out in the National League during the playoffs this year, this isn't hockey anymore, it's a special units contest.
We slightly out played Carolina in the first half, and got blown out in the second. That’s all you need to know
Thank you Charlie! Michkov is just not there yet. He is still very young and first playoffs, but I’m just not seeing he has the ceiling as initially thought
I know we have a tendency, as fans, to think that what we see in front of us now will always be that way. So it feels like drastic changes are needed to fix the powerplay, the finishing, etc. And don’t get me wrong, fixes are needed. But Carolina used to be “can’t finish their chances, can’t score on the powerplay”. And they did get better with work, age, experience. And by making changes to their roster, but not by bringing in some superstar or turning over their whole core.
The most important players they got rid of en route to becoming who they are now were Brett Pesce, Teuvo Teravainen, and Martin Necas. Those are the level of changes the Flyers need, and then just wait for these kids to earn their seasoning.
Flyers are ahead of schedule. Sucks now, but look where Carolina started this run they’re on now. Getting the brakes beat off them by Boston and Tampa.

They are so clueless on the powerplay and it's visibly contagious. Nobody is used to teammates moving with the puck, so their heads aren't always up looking around for options. It's just "I receive the puck from here and then I move it to there". Same two places every time. Porter made a really great cut into the slot on the 5-on-3 and Zegras was not paying attention and completely missed him. I don't know what they're doing in practice, but it's difficult to have a powerplay this bad this many seasons in a row.
Carolina is just better. Flyers been playing playoff hockey since the end of Olympic break. It took them everything they had left to take out Pittsburgh. The tank was empty in round 2. I'm so proud of this team. We have such a bright future ahead of us. Pick up some more pieces in off season and spend summer as a coaching staff, to resolve the power play issues that hurt us for last 5 plus years. Move forward.

I know Michkov has his issues, but not putting him out there with the first unit on the 5 on 3 makes no sense.
Regarding the PP, I think the 5 on 3 was the pivotal moment. You are down in a game the coach said is as close to a must win as he’ll say. I saw that moment as the “in case of emergency break glass” moment of the series. I would have liked to have seen a TO there. Set up the 5 on 3. Sanheim needed to be at the point. Outside of 55, PP2 was generating more offense, they should have been out there with 6. Have Coots take the draw instead of Dvorak. You needed a goal there and to come up empty and seemingly with no plan to do anything different was a huge miss by the coaching staff.
Freddy Anderson stuck his foot outside of the paint to initiate contact on the york penalty, then flopped.

I’m not ok with Tochett’s excuses for developing players on the PP. He’s the one who chose to limit Michkov’s PP time. And sticking with Risto as your PP defenseman without trying Andrae shows Tochett to be stubborn about doing things he feels comfortable with.
Package risto to get another center. Find another 4th line center so coots can stay at 4th line wing.
