When is the ideal time for the Calgary Flames to buy out Jonathan Huberdeau’s contract?
Also, read David Pagnotta's comments on the Flames trading up: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/san-jose-sharks-macklin-celebrini-chicago-blackhawks-connor-bedard-contract-extension-salary-free-agency-short-long-term-aav
Until cap space is a factor, Hubes is still worth a certain amount per year. If his worth is $4 MM then he's only overpaid by $6.5MM and the flames will still get some mileage out of him. To buy him out will cost more for the flames. Like a bad drive off the tee, we lose stroke and distance to buy him out (with the exception of the balance after his signing bonus). If the cap space is tight then this scenario could change if the Flames can make the playoffs.
Absolutely get rid of him . Plugging roster spot with nothing positive from him.
Huberdeau's contract is buyout proof. If we buy him out this year we save $200k this year and next. In 28-29 we save $2.7 mjil. In 29-30 we save $200k. In his last year we save $4.7 mil. So the salary savings/cap hit is minimal until his last year. Buying him out makes no sense, You would have to pay him nearly his entire salary not to play.
Hopefully he will retire before his contract is up.
I think we should take the chance and try trade up to second. If Toronto decide on somebody else, we get McKenna, if not, we get Stenberg, win/win if you ask me
When you need the cap space then you can look to buy him out. In the meantime if he rebounds and gets 25 goals and 50 assists which isn't even really a rebound it would be coming back to his mean. Then he would still be overpaid but not by enough to warrant a buyout.
I don't mean to be cruel here but I replayed it 10 times to be sure I heard you say it but you said the one advantage to trading Huberdeau would be to add another draft pick to Calgary's picks. You do realize you would not be getting a draft pick but giving out 1 or 2 first round picks to unload him. I really need to start my own channel because I know more than the people I'm watching.
So you think we should pay a play what 5 mil a yrs not to play with us and then he signs with another team how foolish he is coming back lets see how he does after operation . Who do you think would grab him at 32 when we are working so hard to move him don't you think the teams have the same thoughts way to old why risk it. Thanks BT. Stick with 6th we will get a player Viggo and move on.Maybe next yr NHL won't rip us off unless Oilslicks end up bottom 10 the they will get another 1st overall proving that the NHL draft is rigged.
Bjorck > Stenberg
Huby seems to be a positive presence in the dressing room. I think one just needs to bite the bullet and accept we have him for his contract.
I would try to send some players, prospects, and picks to TO and SJ.
Buy outs are stupid it doubles the time he is on the books. Cap space is not an issue right now so they should not.
If you wanted to trade Huberdeau and eat half his cap hit, you’d still need to add lots of draft picks to move him. He can’t be bought out, as there is little savings. The best case scenario is he goes on LTIR.
Totally disagree with Ryan G on buying out Huberdeau at this point in time when the Flames are rebuilding and have cap space as a luxury to bring in more draft picks or even have the ability to trade Huberdeau with salary retention. You only do a buyout when the club is desperate to dump the player for someone who will fit in better and it is make the playoffs and try to win now mode. The fact that you have fans like this where you want to rush the rebuilding process just to shoot for the completion of a new arena is the wrong mind process to build a mediocre team, like we've seen for so long! Also, from what Ryan G said, trading to spot #2 will not get you a generational player in this draft or from most draft. It would've been good if the Flames have tried to tank for that #1 overall position but that's never in the Flames cards, ever! I would agree that if Conroy was smart, he'd move some of this year's draft picks from the first round and second rounds to get to 2nd and 3rd overall. However, for Conroy, is quantity over quality and hope for the best if these draft picks turn out or not. Flames need center depth but all Conroy has been doing is stocking up on goalies and low to mid end D. The centers are either aging or small with no real depth and size. This draft will be telling on where the Flames will be going forward since this draft is supposed to be somewhat deep. However, picking up the "best" player in their position hasn't been the Flames strong suit since probably some time in the early 80's!
As for Huberdeau, what the Flames should've done was sell Kadri earlier and tanked as hard and as fast as possible. Hi contract is bad but it's manageable for a rebuilding team. No one wants that term on his contract. So, the Flames can manage it now after dumping all pending free agent players. Flames can manage Huberdeau's contract because they need it to reach the cap floor to continue sucking to place themselves in top 10 or even top 5 for the lottery picks. Rebuilding is a long haul if you want to do it properly with good prospects. These can later be used for better trades. So, even though Hubes suck, he's still worth something in the meanwhile and maybe the Flames can get something out of him later. It's not wasted. Buying him out now is just wasting the rebuild away and hoping to make the playoffs for nothing because the quality of draft is more important than just to make the playoffs and exit early anyways!
I have to disagree, on buying out Hubby. His value in the locker room and talent he has for mentorship with the young players. Especially if his game comes back after this surgery. Who dropped the gloves after that terrible hit on Coronato. ‘89 Flames had Lanny, current Flames have Hubby. GFG!!!
