Good chance this is just Grier doing his due diligence and not necessarily a direct signal he's going D or passing on Reid in round one. He likely has already had some preliminary calls with other GMs around the league, and at the very least, doesn't want to get caught 'flat-footed' if another team really wants to secure Stenburg/Malhotra on draft night (i.e., Hawks, Blues, or Canucks).
Its a no brainer. Its McKenna or Ivar. 20 th pick go get defense or trade for defense. Free agency get defense
It's always possible these dinners are misdirection. If you're really set on, say, Albert Smits (who's arguably the most NHL-ready defenseman in the draft) or you have Carels and Verhoeff ranked about the same, if another team is really high on Stenberg or a particular defenseman, that team might be scared into trading up, giving the Sharks a current asset while still getting the player they really want.

Drafting defensemen is tough. The Matthew Schaefer’s of the world are so rare. Most require years of development and a lot of hope they pan out. This year’s class is no different. Take Stenberg. You can always draft a defenseman later and have the same hope as you would with someone earlier. These are teenagers and no one knows how they will develop. It’s a crap shoot with those guys.

I would give you our 5th pick, a 3rd, Will Cuylle, 24 years old 3.9m a year ( similar to william eklund only hes more gritter) he scores 20 goals a year and averages 300+ hits a season and EJ Emery, our 1st round round pick, who is a dman. So you will add another 20+ goal scorer in Will Cuylle and a much gritty player, and you can select a dman at the 5th pick, either chase Reid or another good dman, like carels, verhoff, or smits

Draft another forward and the Sharks become the future Edmonton Oilers. It’s Chase Reid or bust if they’re keeping the pick. If I’m the Sharks, I’m trading the 2nd pick for D and more first round picks.
Take best player available. Take Stenberg or McKenna. This may be our last opportunity to draft a top 5 guy for many seasons. Take the gift.
I can see us trading more of our current roster plus that 20th 1st round pick to trade down to a top 10 pick with the draft or take an all star current defenseman in the league.

I agree, can’t wait to read that Reid had dinner with Grier and the Sharks staff. Grier is not blind like some Sharks fans are and he can see that this is the way to get a top defenseman. I lean Reid but I would be jumping in excitement if we got Carels or Verhoeff or any other dman. I would pick Reid because he has the highest ceiling but I really like Carels as well. Tall, physical and great defensive game. Reid and Carels both fit like a glove for the Sharks. I’m so relived that Grier is the best GM we’ve had and he knows the piece to finish the rebuild is a dman. And in 3 or 5 years we’ll win a cup because we’ll have a 1 D. He knows if he drafts a forward, that future won’t happen. So glad we have Grier
Trade down for Sam Rinzel and the #4 pick from Chicago. Draft Carson Carels, and sign Darren Radysh. (or trade #20 for Braden Schneider)

Sharks should take bpa and go stenberg. They’ll be on the Toronto/edmonton trajectory.
No they do not…. Not taking the BPA is absolutely dumb. Chase Reid, Carson Carels and Keaton Verhoff's numbers weren't as good as Dickinson's and we picked him @ 9th overall….. Even if we don't need Stenberg, grab him anyways and we can trade him for that top level defensemen.
But before we pass up on the kid that scouts are saying is the best player to come out of Sweden in the last 10 years. Imagine having your entire Top 6 all being within 1-3 years of each other in age, and let them build and grow together… That Top 6 being… Celebrini, Smith, Misa, Eklund, Stenberg and Musty…
Also we have a lot of developing weapons already in Polkamp, Cagnoni, Wang and of course Dickinson. It would be completely insane if we pass on Stenberg….
None of those players have the stats that Dickinson had and are not worth giving up our 2nd pick…. And even if we did pick one of them, it's still going to be a longer development process than Stenberg, who has been playing against men in the Swedish league and bolts right on to any teams Top 6. They are certainly not going to be a Mathew Schafer..
The Sharks could swap with Chicago, get assets from Chicago and get one of the two top D men.
Chicago gets the forward they need in Stenberg or McKenna depending, and everyone’s is happy.
The Hawks have several very promising young D men, plus draft picks up the wazoo, including three second round picks this year and three firsts next year.
A swap just makes too much sense to not happen.
Trade down to three? Compare what assets Vancouver has to offer compared to Chicago. Players, picks it’s no contest, it’s Chicago hands down.
1 – McKenna
2 – Stenberg
3 – Malhotra or Carels, or Verhoff or Reid
4 – take your pick, one of those D men will still be there, or Malhotra, or whoever.
You don't trade the #2 pick. Period. Use the pick on Stenberg or Reid. The Sharks don't need to help out any of these other teams. Some of those awful trade deals being put out there are ridiculous.
Sounds like Greir is making some backup plans in case Chicago calls at the 11th hour with a crazy trade proposition. Like Frondell and the 4th for the 2nd.
