We went through the NHL scouts Mock Draft, but this article gives us even MORE juicy opinions on the top draft prospects this year!!
Let me know, what do YOU think of these quotes from NHL scouts/executives? Which do YOU agree & disagree with? And which of these opinions shocked you the most?? #GravGang
Tier 1:
McKenna
Stenberg
Tier 2:
Reid
Malhotra
Carels
Verhoeff
Tier 3:
Everyone else
The only change from “McKenna and a Stenberg are amazing” to “no one really wows us” is the draft lottery lol
I wouldn’t touch Viggo or Villa until the 20s. Pippa too don’t like these defenseman that much. I do like the Axle kid RD that runs the PP and a nice 2 way game
When people say there is no Bedard or Celebrini in the draft you know that there are some people who need to be fired. For the record Craig Button is also saying this. And yet 12 months ago he was saying McKenna was generational. What changed? So why is this opinion widespread?
I will tell you why. Because many scouts are awful at talent evaluation and bad at their jobs. They ignore basic information or context about players. They don’t do their homework and they are bad at their jobs. This article was hilariously bad.
What are scouts missing? How quality of teammates can affect players and their statistical output. Put Stenberg on Bjorck’s SHL team and no one is talking about how Stenberg is a “first overall” candidate player. He would put up similar points totals to Bjorck. Bjorck outscored Stenberg and set scoring records before his SHL season. Look it up. None of the scouts seem to be talking about this. Ask them why Bjorck scored so little compared to Stenberg. They haven’t asked that question let alone answered it. I know why. Stenberg had far better and older offensive teammates to play with in the SHL. Gee, I wonder if that had an impact on his scoring. You think? Scouts apparently didn’t think about it.
McKenna? Sorry but I am going to be really harsh here. The people bashing his NCAA season… need to be fired. Look at his roster. Look at his team’s situation with injuries. Look at his center. His center was a winger picked in the seventh round. His winger for a center was injured for months during his “slow” start. Who was he playing with? Bottom six low talent defensive players. Then understand how impressive it was to finish second in PTS/G with numbers near Celebrini. With far worse supporting talent, McKenna put up more expected assists than Celebrini and Fantilli combined. He had more than 0.5 PTS/G more scoring than Bedard in the WHL.
Keep that in mind when you hear the repeated nonsense takes about how McKenna isn’t that great a prospect. What I learned about McKenna is that this talk motivates him more and a lot of these people saying this nonsense are going to get egg in their face.
This is nothing new. We learned recently that Celebrini was massively downplayed as not being as good as Bedard. What did scouts miss? Well, they aren’t too good at their jobs, particularly it seems when comparing players in different leagues.
Those NHL scouts are probably trying to lower McKenna and Stenberg's value to make them fall lower in the draft for their teams. Or maybe they're just coping, since they won't have the option to draft those ultra talented players 😆
I feel like last year it was like this, up to draft day scouts we saying the top 3 could be any order when it was pretty clear at the beginning of the offseason.
I bet we get 0 surprises, no trades, and it’s McKenna, Stenberg, Ried 123
What do you imagine Nashville, St Louis or New Jersey would have to give to San Jose for San Jose to Pick Stenberg for them and trade off to them for reverse goods?
This draft doesn't suck , it just lacks the usual drama . It's gotta be McKenna/Stenberg 1-2 then it's a crap shoot. The last time a draft was like this was '99 when Burke took the Sedins lol ! I've said it all along . I think there's a clear top 12 and you really can't go wrong. It's no wonder teams are looking to trade. I actually believe the Hawks are one of the few with the fire power to move up if they want to , or ……..just get the hell out of the way and go to 8-10 . I don't think they drift too far out of Smits range though (yeah , I just made that a thing lol). Great content Grav !!
Pronman had Laine at #1 😂
These reporters have nothing better to report on with free agency projected to be as bad as it is. They’re out here manufacturing insane headlines
Sharks get McKenna or Ivar ill be super happy. 20th pick get D and Free agency get D.
Just remember who is writing article and which team they support. This is tell you everything
It's etcetera.
16:49 thats not ironic. That is a coincidence.
5:48 he's just saying calebs a heart guy. More likey to put his head down and try every single play. McKenna they see as giving up if shit doesn't go his way. Easy to see why some scouts would say Caleb long term.
The takeaway is that some professionals are nuts and that the positional bias is incredible. McKenna and Stenberg are incredibly good wingers. But "ehhhh they're not centers" is basically the takeaway from these quotes.
It really is amazing how those biases come right out with some anonymity. McKenna and Stenberg are wingers that are a little under 6'0 so yeah they aren't that impressive. This draft is going to be crazy to look at in a few years.
The more I watch Bjorck and I see the success of Suzuki in Montreal, the more I lean towards him at 3 if the Canucks want a centre, or at least top 10. As a Canucks fan, I'd rather they picked BPA (unless that player is American, and we don't want that headache again), but if it must be a centre, I'd take Bjorck over Malhotra because of upside alone. Sure, having 2 or 3 smaller centres isn't ideal, but this is year one of the rebuild. Next year's draft is expected to be deeper. If anything, Carels would probably be the best pick. No, I'm not taking the American, for the reason I listed already. Top Americans don't stay in Canada, and why would they when they can pay lower taxes and have a chance to win? A Canadian team hasn't won since 1993. You don't want to give the guy a tweener contract with some trade protection, and then have him demand a trade to only 3 teams. That limits your return. You could have a hell of a player, but he won't be worth anything because teams know you have no negotiating power. Take Canadians and Europeans in the 1st round if at all possible.
Smits going 1st overall just to play on the 3rd pairing and pk 😂
What hockey fans NEVER seem to understand is that scoring success depends on opportunity.
THAT does not mean you are the best of that draft it simply means you were given a better opportunity than other players from that draft.
So in case of McKenna most feel he will be playing with Mathews and knies so he will be given every opportunity to succeed.Other top picks might be sent back or to the AHL never given any chance at all until maybe 2-3 years later.
This also leans into the AGE factor so many talk about it is not the AGE but again some players are not given the best opportunity until 2-3 years later.
Caleb Malhotra is no better a prospect than Cayden Lindstrom was back in 2024 and Lindstrom is looking like a bust.
McKenna built that "Next One" hype a few years back, but it hasn't translated. I'm not gonna call him Shane Wright but the circumstances of his draft year aren't unsimilar. People feel McKenna is entitled to the 1st slot given what he did against farm boys in junior. When the hockey got really good and the competition was fierce, he couldn't distinguish himself. Toronto should probably pass on him (the way the Habs passed on Wright) but does Chayko have the stones to go against conventional wisdom?
Verhoff was considered first a year ago by over 10 head scouts. Don’t write him off.
I honestly wonder if all this anti-McKenna reporting is coming straight from the Leafs camp? They are the Yankees of the NHL world and have the reach to pull off a full court press campaign against him. If it is true it’s obviously prime their fan base on them not selecting him. As a Sharks fan I remember before we drafted Smith the media was all over the place saying how he was the perfect fit for SJ etc. It was obvious. I’m a SJ fan, I personally like Stenberg more, but it McKenna falls to us, you don’t pass up on him. You take him, then figure the rest out with your remaining picks and next years draft, or a trade. When you have a a secret Santa gift exchange at work and you draw for selections positions and you pick 2nd (cause I’m an SJ fan), you don’t pick the $40 silver ware set because you need silverware. You pick the $500 Japanese knife set that the one person who always feels the need to outdo everyone purchased . Just like you see a sign that say’s “Take only one” and you see a bunch of denominations of cash. You take the $100 bill, not the $5 bill because that pays for the Red Bull you need to get you through your day. lol it’s quite easy. I can go on and on.
Malhotra is #11 on my list
Credibility doesn't matter on the internet. Stong, bold take. May your views be many!
I do agree with Malhotra- thats the worst old school/craug button take of the draft. Mal projects as a 3c ftr- with an ABSOLUTE upside as a low scoring/d specialist 2c…
I dont know why Leaf fans want Mckenna at 1. They should be trading DOWN…. McKenna is going to get eaten alive in Toronto. Ill tell you how its gunna go… Hes going to struggle start of the season fans are gunna see players like Stenberg and Reid making easier transitions to the NHL and get on Mckennas defensive game its gunna tank his confidence. Leafs go nowhere. We NEED a guy like Reid or Stenberg. Guys who have an all around game that fans can get behind that contribute when theyre not putting up points.
Yeah, so you said that McKenna isn’t a franchise defenceman or franchise centre, that’s cool, he’s a winger. Like why not mention franchise winger? Like it’s right there. The hate on McKenna the instant the Leafs won the lottery is actually insane.
This guy is talking like he doesnt know the difference between the OHL and the WHL.
the leafs get 1oa, and now people say ‘im happy not to get 1oa this year’. yea ok clowns.
As a Sharks fan, "In Grier, we trust."
im calling verhoff 2nd and vancouver gunna be happy, everybody is forgeting verhoff is 17 NOT 18 AS A DEFENCEMAN! Hes going to be the better Ekblad and he went 1st overall… McKenna is a lock at 1 imo and hes a Penn state lock next year
Does nobody else read this stuff as smokescreens? "Stenberg will fall" "there are no A's, just a bunch of B+'s". Blowing smoke.
Everyone outside Toronto hates the Leafs to the point of delusion
Some scouts are really dumb, as evidenced by how many horrible picks get made every year. "I wouldn't want to be picking 1 this year" like is that a real quote? Morons.
This is why you are not a NHL scout
Drafting by need is how players like demidov falls
I love how these "experts" just out themselves. A lot of bs about players thats not even true
These scouts and analysts are salty. Trying to push a BS narrative
Stenberg is way better then all others players in draft not even close
I would rather draft reid to van but Caleb could be him people talked a lot of crap about his uncle also they have that fire in that family to prove everyone wrong
soo mckenna had 130 points in his D-1 and malhotra had 40 less points in a way worse league and better team around him in his draft year and scout have malhotra over mckenna?!?! If mckenna stayed in the whl this year he would've had 3 ppg lmao
The fact that you think any scouting director would seriously say "I wouldn't want to be picking #1 this year" just shows how stupid this take really is. But then again, the Leafs have the #1 pick, so the logic falls into place quite nicely.
What an idiotic take
Mark Leach has worked in NHL scouting for 30 years and has never been on a team to select higher than 4th overall I believe. Ya I am really sure he hates having that 1st overall. What a tough job he has….
