At this point, I'm more cheering for Ovie to get the scoring record more than anything else.
Just want Ovi to get goals, don't care about Cups anymore.
Also we have a lot of really good prospects that we want to start playing McMichael and others. No reason to drop good players for the sake of dropping them and getting rid of Backstrom would be idiotic.

Ovi shouting at Sammy got a little overblown by the media; the Russians on the team are hanging out constantly in off time, including Sammy.
Problem was that led to the COVID breaks in the team; Ovi learned from it the first time, but Sammy and Kuzy kept hanging out in hotel rooms which was why they both got on the protocol twice. Caps' problem isn't really locker room issues, just the age of the team (and as much as we hate to admit it, Ovi, Backy, and Oshie just aren't as durable as they used to be). Injuries every season now, especially late in the regular season, combined with the brass continuously not playing young players (see: Willy's mismanagement for the first 5 years, Vrana and Burakovsky not getting playing time for a while when they were ready, Sprong only getting ice time late in the season, etc.)

Lapierre looks like a game breaking offensive catalyst who can make the players around him better and generate scoring chances. Washington desperately needs him in the lineup. The defense is atrocious. The goaltending is serviceable but not good enough to get by with that poor defense.
Not a caps fan but i just hope ovi scores as many goals as possible.

As a Wings fan, would love to see Mantha shine in DC. As a Caps fan, we'll see how the injury situation plays out, and if Kuzy can somehow stop making boneheaded plays. Would love to see the core bring home one more cup.
Pros of the Caps:
Potentially great goaltender growth for Samsonov and Vanicek
D corps looks solid
Top line is easily top 3 in the league
Cons of the Caps:
Potential disaster if goalies do not develop
Forward depth is lacking
Restrictive salary cap situation and unfavorable trading position
Final Placement? 5-6th in the East if running well. 7-8th at worst assuming no disastrous injuries. Very outside chance to miss the playoffs if top line suffers casualties.
